Southwick Cemetery Commission Addresses Tree Safety and Parking Protocols Amid Recent Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Southwick Cemetery Commission meeting, members discussed the removal of hazardous trees and established new parking guidelines following issues during a recent funeral. Additionally, updates on burial statistics and ongoing maintenance projects were provided.
A significant topic was the removal of several large pine trees causing safety concerns due to falling branches. These branches posed a risk to nearby headstones, with one incident narrowly avoiding damage to stones valued at $10,000 each. The decision to remove the trees was made to prevent potential damage and financial liability for the town. To replace the lost shade, the commission plans to plant cherry trees that will bloom in the spring.
The meeting also highlighted parking issues during a recent funeral, where cars parked on grassy areas and near significant monuments, causing damage. The Commission decided to contact local funeral homes to reiterate parking rules and ensure better coordination. A new parking area is planned to prevent similar issues, utilizing millings to create a defined space and reduce the impact on grassy areas.
Furthermore, the Commission discussed ongoing maintenance, including filling potholes with assistance from the Department of Public Works and clearing sand piles to expand burial sections. The cemetery’s caretaker, Evan, has been instrumental in these efforts.
