- Meeting Overview:
The Southwick Park and Recreation Commission recently held a meeting where they discussed several issues, including the addition of pickleball courts, concerns about children’s play area maintenance, and the procurement of maintenance equipment for Wally Park. The most significant portion of the meeting revolved around the proposal to add more pickleball courts to the community’s recreational offerings due to high demand. The Commission also addressed a resident’s safety concerns regarding the children’s play area and approved the purchase of a Toro infield rake.
During the meeting, the Commission engaged in an extensive discussion about the pickleball court project, which is poised to enhance the town’s recreational facilities. The presentation, led by Randy White and Rob Lebec, focused on a design for six new pickleball courts, detailing aspects such as court layout, fencing, lighting, and surfacing. Debates emerged over whether to situate all six courts at a single location or distribute them across different sites. The discussion also touched upon the potential to mirror a similar project that was currently out for bidding in a neighboring town and the logistics of incorporating two additional courts at Wally Park.
The debate extended to the number of courts that should be added, with some members suggesting that six courts would better serve the community’s needs based on regional demand. The discussion also brought up the necessity for approval from the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) for funding and the advisability of proceeding with the original plan while considering future expansions. The importance of planning for lighting was emphasized to minimize possible future disruptions.
In addition to the pickleball project, the Commission addressed a public safety concern regarding the children’s play area at Wally Park. A resident had reported several maintenance issues, including loose screws on the climbing wall, hazardous metal wires on the pyramid climber, and a dislocated rope. The Commission responded with assurances that these issues would be examined and resolved promptly.
Financial decisions were also part of the meeting’s agenda, such as the approval of funds for the purchase of a Toro infield rake. The equipment, valued at $5,000, is expected to enhance the maintenance capabilities at Wally Park and will be financed through the park’s account. In the same vein of park improvements, the Commission considered a proposal from the Titans for a new shed to house field maintenance equipment. Locations for the shed were discussed, along with potential concerns about vandalism.
The Commission also deliberated on the need to modify the softball field to accommodate various sports and discussed ongoing efforts to address washouts on the rail trail caused by nearby farm drainage. Maintenance of the rail trail was another topic, with sinkholes and potholes needing attention. Projects by the Friends group, such as a cleanup on Bill Road and a rail trail count, were acknowledged.
Other maintenance issues raised included the condition of the softball field, which was reported to have incorrect materials that required scraping and re-leveling. A storage shed with a broken door was also discussed, necessitating the relocation of its contents.
The meeting wrapped up with a mention of the successful Easter egg hunt, which attracted a good turnout despite unfavorable weather conditions. The Commission then moved to adjourn, with the motion to do so being seconded and passed.
