Southwick Council on Aging Discusses Anonymous Donation, Transportation Solutions, and Upcoming Events
- Meeting Overview:
The Southwick Council on Aging’s recent meeting on November 10th touched on several topics, including a substantial anonymous donation of food, the challenges of senior transportation, and plans for future events. The Council also deliberated on logistics for a volunteer luncheon and the closure of items related to the master plan, all while maintaining a focus on the engagement and welfare of the senior community in Southwick.
One of the meeting’s most points of discussion was the anonymous donation from a local couple, which provided a generous supply of extra food for the community’s senior participants. This donation was distributed in brown bags to 30 recipients. While the donation was appreciated, there was a mention that turkey was not included in the bags, which some participants had requested. The Council viewed the increase in program participation as a positive development, emphasizing the community’s responsiveness to the needs of its seniors.
Another issue was the exploration of transportation alternatives for seniors, with a specific focus on ride-sharing services such as Uber. The Council acknowledged the challenges seniors face in using these services, such as downloading the app and understanding how to book rides, particularly for medical appointments. Concerns about safety and familiarity with these platforms were raised, prompting discussions about potential resources to assist seniors in navigating these technologies. The Council considered the idea of providing safety tips and information on ride-sharing services. The conversation also touched on transportation assistance provided by hospitals, with an acknowledgment that collaborations with such services could be beneficial.
In connection with transportation, the Council also discussed the ongoing need for meal delivery drivers. One of the current drivers had taken a part-time job, which necessitated finding a replacement to ensure consistent service. Adjustments were made to delivery routes to optimize the distribution and ensure all meals were delivered by 1:30 PM, allowing recipients to enjoy their lunches before 2:00 PM.
The meeting also included plans for upcoming events, such as a proposed veterans’ breakfast where veterans could enjoy free meals. This idea was met with enthusiasm by Council members. Additionally, various winter activities were planned, including chair volleyball, golf, and a new game with a batting net, all of which would be promoted on social media to encourage senior participation. The Council underscored the importance of keeping seniors active during the winter months, with reports of high attendance in ongoing classes serving as evidence of their success.
In terms of logistical planning, there was a focus on organizing a volunteer luncheon. The Council emphasized the importance of securing a suitable venue within the town, with several options discussed, including the soon-to-open Roma restaurant and the community-friendly Blackboard restaurant. Capacity limits were a concern, as the expected number of attendees exceeded what some venues could accommodate. A commitment was made to thoroughly explore local options before considering venues outside the town.
The meeting further addressed the closure of items related to the master plan, with an approval vote scheduled for the next meeting. This vote would finalize the closure and allow for the resending of documentation as needed.
Old business discussions included the successful completion of a wall in the exercise room, which was built to a greater extent than originally planned, improving the attachment to walls. An elliptical machine had been donated, and plans were in place for Donna Davis to conduct a class to instruct users on the equipment. There was also a brief mention of the Christmas party scheduled for December 16th, with a meal choice of fish, chicken, or beef, and a capacity limit of 120 attendees. While inviting department heads to the party was considered, the idea was ultimately set aside, although selectmen and other officials might be invited.
