- Meeting Overview:
The Southwick Council on Aging convened on May 13, 2024, focusing on upcoming summer activities and the welfare of its members. The discussion also touched on the continuation of popular classes through summer, volunteer appreciation, and the process for hiring a new director.
The meeting opened with the announcement of several new events. Notably, a probate information session was scheduled for June 11th, aimed at addressing concerns related to wills and other important documents for the elderly. The session will be led by a knowledgeable and approachable speaker, the Register of Probate, at 12:30 PM, a time selected to ensure good attendance.
On June 21st, a canvas painting event will take place at 10:00 AM, featuring a sunflower painting in a “paint and snack” format. The cost of participation is set at $10, with the inclusion of light snacks to attract more attendees. An ice cream social is scheduled for July 16th at 12:30 PM, promising a variety of ice cream and toppings. This event will also serve as a platform for a lottery tree fundraiser by the Friends group, with tickets to be sold in June and the drawing to take place at the social.
In addition to the new events, the Council discussed the continuation of classes through the summer months, a decision met with positive feedback from participants. With substantial attendance, some classes have become self-funding, and the Council has decided to continue offering them at a low cost, leveraging grant money to facilitate participation.
The meeting also served as an opportunity to recognize volunteers with plans for an appreciation lunch. Out of 55 volunteers contacted, 40 have responded, and arrangements are made to provide a similar menu to the previous year’s event, including chicken, vegetables, and a chocolate dessert.
Regarding the Council’s administrative matters, the topic of hiring a new director was broached. The application period for the position had closed, and there was a call for the Council to have input in the selection process, as had been the practice in the past. It was mentioned that the Select Board might review applications and that the Council should consider developing a set of questions for potential interviewees.
Other items discussed included the success of ongoing programs, such as the Zumba classes and the Brown Bag program, which continues to run smoothly with pick-ups coinciding with scheduled voting. In financial updates, preparations are underway for purchasing supplies for upcoming events and giveaways.
The meeting closed with a brief mention of the Council’s Gardening Club, which has seen a growing membership and is looking forward to a donation of plants to further its gardening projects.
