Southwick Council on Aging Tackles Senior Meal Quality and Upcoming Gym Facility
- Meeting Overview:
The Southwick Council on Aging’s recent meeting delved into enhancing senior dining experiences, addressing budget concerns, and planning a new gym facility. Key discussions included a push for varied meal options, updates on gym equipment for seniors, and financial matters related to staff salaries and classroom expenses.
27:39A significant portion of the meeting concentrated on the quality and variety of meals provided at the Senior Center. Participants discussed the absence of certain staples like bread and suggested moving back to serving meals in trays to make them more enticing. The conversation underscored the need for diverse meal options, with some participants highlighting the popularity of specific dishes like spaghetti dinners. In a bid to improve meal offerings, a member expressed their intent to prepare meals such as shepherd’s pie and baked ziti monthly, emphasizing the importance of nutritious options with statements like “it’s fiber.”
13:30The discussion around meals also touched on the “brown bag” program, which supplies meals but has seen stagnant participation. Concerns were raised about the repetitive nature of the contents, such as rice and canned goods, which might not appeal to everyone. The Highland Valley organization plans to host a bingo day to boost attendance at meal services, as numbers have dwindled since the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants noted that while the center’s lunch offerings were available, the appeal of the meals was sometimes lacking, leading to suggestions of improving the balance and presentation to draw more participants back to in-person dining. Ideas to incentivize attendance, such as providing small gifts or homemade baked goods, were proposed.
Attention then shifted to the proposed gym facility designed for senior use. The facility is expected to house equipment including an exercise bike, treadmill, and lighter free weights that do not exceed 30 pounds. The plan includes a dual-function weight machine suitable for both leg and upper body exercises, with adjustable weights controlled by a pin system. Concerns were raised about safety and the necessity of having a physical trainer available to guide seniors, particularly those who may not have exercised for a long time. Suggestions were made to have seniors sign a document confirming they received training before using the gym equipment.
27:39In financial discussions, the completion of the Sillette Grant and the ongoing budget preparations were noted. There was a particular focus on the budget for classroom expenses, which amount to about $188,000 annually. A request was made to increase town funding by four to five thousand dollars to cover the shortfall, as current revenue from class fees and town support was deemed insufficient. Additionally, it was reported that Denise Seibert received a raise, leading to discussions about the fairness of salary allocations. A member highlighted the disparity, noting, “she was here 25 years and she was making less than somebody that comes in off the street,” emphasizing the need for equity based on experience.
13:30The meeting also touched on the Southwick 2040 plan, which involves planning for the future needs of Southwick, particularly in relation to seniors. The Chairperson of the initiative reached out to include the Council on Aging in these efforts.
Other topics included an upcoming Grandparents Day event, which has been growing in participation over the years. Suggestions for activities included ice cream distribution for grandchildren visiting seniors. The possibility of a card-making workshop led by Nancy Zun from the Library Council was also well-received, with expectations that it would be a valuable activity for seniors.
27:39The meeting concluded with reflections on the success of a recent Christmas gathering attended by approximately 125 individuals, with positive feedback despite minor logistical challenges. Suggestions were made to improve future events, including repositioning tables to facilitate easier access to food and enhancing the overall event experience. Updates on pickleball court developments and plans for new lighting and shuffleboard were also shared.
