Southwick Economic Development Commission Focuses on New Town Planner and Economic Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Southwick Economic Development Commission meeting, the appointment of Alvin Allen as the new full-time town planner and economic development person was announced. Although Allen will not be a formal member of the commission, he is encouraged to engage with its initiatives. Allen’s experience, particularly in grants and economic development from his previous role in Springfield, is anticipated to benefit the town significantly.
The meeting featured a discussion about the commission’s organizational structure and goal prioritization. Norm Chver, chair of the master plan implementation committee, led this segment, proposing that the commission’s members work in teams to manage action items efficiently. This approach, which mirrors successful strategies from other committees, aims to streamline the handling of the commission’s 32 support actions. Chver’s suggestion of using a spreadsheet to consolidate these priorities for easier analysis was positively received.
A major point of interest was the “South and Bloom” initiative, designed to enhance Southwick’s aesthetic appeal and attract visitors. While the initiative has sparked interest from local businesses, a registration glitch has caused uncertainty about the number of participating businesses. Promotional efforts, involving flyers, social media, and banners, have been implemented, but there is an acknowledgment that further engagement is needed. Email campaigns and face-to-face interactions with business owners were proposed as more effective methods to increase participation. The initiative aims to align with local events like Open Farm Day to maximize its impact.
The meeting also addressed the development of a measurement package to track the progress of various lead items. Emphasizing a realistic approach to avoid overextending resources, the commission plans to present the finalized package to the select board and planning board in June. The importance of clear priorities and feasible timelines was underscored, with an eye towards showing tangible success.
Economic discussions included the local option meal excise tax, which could potentially benefit Southwick’s economy. While the tax, set at an additional 0.75% on the standard meal tax, could generate significant revenue, some members expressed concerns about its complexity and the accountability of fund usage. Enhancing the town center through the development of a rail trail connector was also explored, with cooperation from local entities such as the Christ Lutheran Church facilitating parking for bike trail users. This project is expected to boost local business and condo sales, with grant writing for funding anticipated early next year.
The commission discussed the importance of a potential beautification committee to promote community pride. This could involve partnerships to host events combining local agriculture, crafts, and businesses. Ideas like farmers markets and a “farm hop” initiative for seniors were proposed to raise awareness and offer educational opportunities about local farms.
Attention was given to the need for improved communication and engagement with local businesses. Acknowledging previous disconnects, the commission proposed developing a print brochure and tailored promotional efforts to strengthen relationships between the commission and business owners. Strategies for increasing website traffic and online promotion of recreational activities were also highlighted as areas for growth.
Zoning map reviews and potential changes to facilitate multi-dwelling unit development were discussed. The economic benefits of increasing the town’s residential population and customer base were emphasized. The commission agreed to continue exploring zoning principles and goals in future meetings.
