Sparta School Board Discusses Gun Safety with BSmart Initiative and Budget Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The Sparta School Board meeting focused on promoting gun safety through the BSmart program, addressing budgetary concerns due to rising electricity bills, and highlighting achievements in student sports. The board also discussed personnel changes, policy audits, and future planning for district infrastructure.
The primary highlight of the meeting was a comprehensive presentation by Nicole Howard and Elizabeth Sanchez on the BSmart program, an initiative developed by Every Town for Gun Safety to promote secure gun storage. The presenters, both local residents and parents, emphasized the critical importance of secure gun storage to prevent child injuries and deaths. They shared concerning statistics—firearms are now the leading cause of death for children in the United States, surpassing cancer and motor vehicle accidents. It was noted that 76% of school shooters under the age of 18 obtained firearms from their homes or relatives.
Howard and Sanchez demonstrated various gun locking mechanisms, including biometric safes, and informed attendees about free gun locks available through the Sparta Township Police Department in partnership with Project Child Safe. The BSmart acronym stands for secure, model, ask, recognize, and tell, promoting actions such as securing firearms in homes and vehicles, modeling responsible gun safety behavior, and engaging in open dialogue about gun safety with other parents. Sanchez shared a personal experience of realizing the importance of asking about gun presence in homes where her children visited, highlighting the need for proactive conversations.
The presentation also addressed the significant risk of firearms in suicide attempts, revealing that gun-related attempts are 90% fatal compared to 4% for other methods. Alarmingly, there has been a 126% increase in firearm suicides among youth aged 10 to 14 from 2020 to 2022. The presenters stressed the need for community awareness and dialogue, urging attendees to spread the word about gun safety.
Following the presentation, the board members expressed appreciation for the initiative and discussed ways to support it, such as utilizing back-to-school events for outreach and distributing educational materials through the school’s Genesis platform. There was a positive acknowledgment of the collaboration with the Sparta Police Department.
The meeting also addressed pressing financial concerns, particularly a 40% increase in the district’s electricity bills over the past year, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The board is anticipating key dates for state aid announcements and health care cost adjustments, which will impact budget discussions. The district is also dealing with aging infrastructure challenges, such as a sewer control board outage at Alpine Elementary, which was fortunately covered by insurance. These issues underscore the need for careful financial planning and resource allocation.
Sports achievements were celebrated by student representatives, with senior basketball player Lashm Little scoring his 10,000th career point and senior wrestler Ryan Hernenko achieving his 100th career win. The girls’ basketball coach also reached 100 career wins, and girls’ soccer players Riley Malbury and Adriana Dolinsky received accolades from the New Jersey Girls Soccer Coaches Association.
Personnel changes were acknowledged, with the retirement of Virginia, a speech language specialist, and Christian Wessles, a German teacher, both of whom had long tenures in the district. Additionally, a rescheduled Harlem Wizards game was announced, set for February 1st at 4 p.m. due to previous weather conditions.
The board addressed policy audits. The utilization of the NJSBA’s policy manual was discussed to aid this process, reducing workload and potential legal costs. The board also discussed curriculum and instruction, with a focus on grade skipping and acceleration policies in response to parental concerns.
