- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Sparta Town Council meeting, key resolutions concerning environmental safety, community engagement, and infrastructure were passed. The council approved Resolution 99, addressing the proposed Sussex water quality management plan amendment, and Resolution 97, authorizing special counsel for ongoing litigation involving PFAS chemicals. The council also discussed engaging the community in upcoming celebrations, potential economic opportunities through entertainment production, and the need for information on a former Superfund site.
Resolution 99 was a focal point of the meeting, passing with a vote of three in favor and two abstentions from Deputy Mayor Dean Blumetti and Mayor Neill Clark. The resolution acknowledged the council’s inability to make a determination on the proposed water quality management plan amendment due to insufficient information, a point that was clarified after members of the public sought understanding of the resolution’s implications. The council emphasized that the resolution was not an endorsement of the amendment but an acknowledgment of the need for more information.
Resolution 97 garnered unanimous support, authorizing the appointment of special counsel for ongoing litigation related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination. PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals causing health concerns and environmental issues.
The meeting also included discussions on community involvement and celebration planning. Councilman Daniel Chiariello provided updates on the Revolutionary NJ 250 Committee, which is tasked with determining activities, events, and celebrations for America’s 250th birthday in 2026. The council encouraged public participation in brainstorming ideas for the commemoration. They also discussed the Hometown Heroes 2024 campaign and Municipal Alliance team activities.
Another topic was the potential of Sparta as a film-ready community. This initiative was raised as an opportunity to attract entertainment production and thereby boost local job opportunities and revenue. The council discussed adding options for a film committee to the online volunteer form, recognizing the success of the locally shot film “Emerald Ties” and the talent within the county.
Further, the council addressed concerns about the former Superfund site following reports of negative test results. They expressed the need to gather more information and collaborate with the town manager to address these concerns. Additionally, concerns were raised about the condition of the Exxon building on Woodport Road, which was described as a “complete disaster,” prompting calls for action.
Council members also discussed the possibility of establishing a sister city relationship and explored state opportunities for grants for shared services. The idea of potentially building a dog pound with state funding was considered, along with the broader potential for shared services in emergency response.
During the public comment period, issues concerning water quality were raised, including concerns about the presence of floral compounds in the water system and the ongoing litigation related to it. The council reassured the public that current standards were being met but acknowledged that tighter future restrictions might require further investment.
