Springfield Council Faces Community Pushback on Oakland Avenue Closure Plan
- Meeting Overview:
The Springfield Town Council meeting was highlighted by vigorous public opposition to the proposed closure of Oakland Avenue, which is slated to be part of a new park development project. This initiative aims to transform the area into a community green space but has sparked debate over its impact on traffic and local infrastructure.
The meeting revealed the township’s intent to develop a pocket park on land acquired at the intersection of Oakland Avenue and South Springfield for $1. Supported by a $416,000 county grant, the project is poised to replace the former billboard site with green space. However, one of the park design options involves closing Oakland Avenue to create a cul-de-sac, adding approximately 600 square feet to the park. This proposal has become a focal point of contention among residents.
Public commentary was dominated by concerns about the potential traffic disruptions caused by closing Oakland Avenue. Residents voiced apprehensions about increased congestion and changes to established traffic patterns. Steven Sachs from Oakland Avenue emphasized the adverse effects on traffic dynamics, stating that making left turns onto Waverly would become difficult without a traffic light. He questioned the necessity of the park, fearing it could lead to litter and noise.
Mara Friedman from Lynden Avenue echoed these sentiments, supporting the park concept but opposing the road closure. She appreciated the removal of “eyesore” billboards but argued that closing Oakland Avenue “makes no sense” due to traffic and safety concerns, particularly near busy areas like the post office. Concerns about flooding from local creeks during storms were also raised, with residents worried about exacerbating existing issues.
The council assured that the project would not worsen runoff problems and emphasized ongoing traffic studies to evaluate the impact of the proposed changes. They committed to seeking community feedback before making any final decisions, with engineering and planning evaluations underway.
Beyond the park project, the meeting celebrated several promotions within the Springfield Police Department. Notably, Captain Ryan Westover, Lieutenant Daniel Caesar, and Police Officer Anthony Crutcher Jr. were honored in a ceremonial swearing-in. Westover expressed gratitude for his family’s support and the opportunities provided by the department.
Lieutenant Caesar’s career was also recognized, noting his contributions as a field training officer and grant writer. The Chief of Police underscored the significance of these promotions as part of a broader departmental reorganization to enhance community service capabilities. Officer Crutcher was welcomed into the department from East Orange, with commendations for his family values and community engagement.
Public comments also touched on other local issues, including the rising popularity of e-bikes. Concerns about e-bike traffic, especially on tennis courts and tracks, were raised. The Chief of Police acknowledged these issues, stating that state legislation is being considered to regulate e-bike use.
Infrastructure topics were addressed, including ongoing challenges with utility poles and wires along Morris Avenue. Residents highlighted safety hazards posed by these issues, prompting promises from Verizon for repairs. Discussions also covered aesthetic improvements in town, such as building painting and redevelopment efforts, described as “hitting singles” to achieve long-term goals.
The meeting concluded with updates on various infrastructure projects, including the Johannaway storm station and roadwork on Midvil and North View. The Mayor reported on efforts to address drainage issues and emphasized the importance of protecting new installations from misuse.
