- Meeting Overview:
During the recent St. Cloud School Board meeting on October 16, 2024, members discussed the implementation of a full-service Community School model, set to launch in January, and received presentations on anti-bullying initiatives from North Junior High School.
The meeting’s primary focus was the introduction of a full-service Community School model, designed to provide a comprehensive support network for students and families. The rollout is planned for January, in collaboration with 13 community organizations. A key aspect of this initiative is a needs assessment survey aimed at achieving a 75% response rate from families. This will allow the district to tailor services effectively, addressing specific community needs. The model includes plans for potential onsite services such as a food pantry, in partnership with the local organization FACT.
Discussion also touched on the integration of emerging language programs, including Chinese and Spanish immersion, with the board recognizing the importance of retaining dual or trilingual students transitioning from elementary to middle school. The administration is in the early stages of planning to accommodate these programs and ensure continuity for students.
The board further addressed the Community Accountability Program (CAP), an alternative to suspension targeting students involved in physical altercations. This program aims to keep students engaged academically while providing restorative practices and specialized services. Instead of being sent home, students participate in discussions at an alternative location, focusing on the incidents that led to their referral. This approach seeks to reduce suspension rates, maintaining educational progress and fostering a supportive environment.
North Junior High School Principal Sasha Hansen presented on various initiatives, notably Unity Day, aimed at promoting inclusivity and reducing bullying. The school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) team organized activities like the Unity rock-paper-scissors challenge and provided students with positive affirmations. Hansen reported that the school aims to ensure every student has a positive adult contact by year-end, alongside a goal to reduce physical altercations by 10%.
The school also introduced the BAR program, focusing on asset-building and risk reduction for middle school students, and hosted events to strengthen family connections, such as a connection conference with a 76% attendance rate. These efforts emphasize the importance of creating a community-focused environment, fostering both student and family engagement.
Additionally, the board discussed staff engagement and retention strategies, including the introduction of “building buddies” for new teachers and initiatives like a wellness room for staff relaxation. These measures are part of a broader effort to enhance morale and foster a sense of belonging among faculty members.
The meeting concluded with a presentation on the district’s 2024-2027 strategic plan development. The plan centers on four major pillars: safety, belonging, collaboration, and excellence. The board was asked to approve the ongoing development work, following a detailed review in a previous session. The Achievement Integration and Equity committee reported on the Minnesota student survey process, emphasizing the need to understand student perceptions of belonging and integration within the district.
