- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the St. Johns County District Media Advisory Committee, a noteworthy debate took place over the appropriateness of two books, “19 Minutes” by Jodi Picoult and “Normal People” by Sally Rooney, for school libraries. The meeting was chaired by Don Sapp, the associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and saw discussions regarding the objections raised against these books, which were ultimately deemed appropriate for school students in grades nine and above.
The focal point of the meeting was the objection to “19 Minutes,” a book that contains themes of sexual activities, nudity, profanity, derogatory terms, violence, hate, abortion, and suicide. Jee Moore, the objecting party, presented her concerns, noting that the book had been removed from other county schools and cited specific passages she found objectionable. The committee engaged in a rigorous evaluation of the book using a checklist designed to assess whether the material was pornographic or prohibited under Florida statute 847.011, and whether it was suited to student needs and age-appropriate.
Throughout the discussion, committee members offered differing viewpoints regarding the book’s explicit content and its potential impact on students. One side of the debate emphasized the explicit nature and potential harm of the book’s content to minors, while others argued the material could provide helpful context for students who have experienced similar situations. The committee pondered whether the book depicted or described sexual conduct as defined in Florida statute 847.1, with some members expressing concerns over its inclusion of topics such as abortion, miscarriage, and drug use. Conversely, there were arguments supporting the importance of access to diverse books, especially for children without parental guidance.
The committee ultimately voted, with one yes vote and seven no votes. Despite one member deeming the book inappropriate for the grade level and age group for which it was used, the consensus was that “19 Minutes” was suitable for grades nine and up. The members underscored the importance of professional judgment in the context of the current social climate and proceeded to review and sign the recommendation document acknowledging their participation in the decision-making process.
The committee also addressed an objection to “Normal People” by Sally Rooney, which was brought forth by the same objecting party, Ms. Moore. The concerns raised were similar in nature, focusing on the book’s sexual content, profanity, and alcohol use. Ms. Moore questioned why explicit content deemed acceptable for R-rated movies should be allowed in school libraries and voiced dissatisfaction over the lack of parental control over children’s access to such materials.
Using the school library media material evaluation checklist, the committee reviewed each criterion. The meeting emphasized a commitment to public record and civility, as the discussion unfolded under the Sunshine Law. Despite the objections, the committee concluded that “Normal People” was not pornographic, did not depict sexual conduct as defined by the relevant statute, was suited to student needs, and was appropriate for the designated grade level.
The meeting illuminated the careful and structured approach taken by the committee to assess the suitability of school library materials, balancing concerns over content with educational value and relevance. In both cases, the books in question were scrutinized for their themes and the potential impact on student readers, with the committee voting in favor of maintaining the availability of these books to students, while also recognizing the need for professional discretion in selecting materials for educational purposes.
The committee’s decisions on these books underscore an ongoing dialogue about the balance between protecting minors from explicit content and providing them with literature that reflects complex and mature themes. The adherence to statutory guidelines and the comprehensive evaluation process highlight the committee’s dedication to making informed recommendations that align with educational standards and community values.
