The Rondo Community Library will undergo substantial renovations to address congestion and design limitations that currently hinder service delivery. The library, which opened in 2006 and serves about 250,000 visits annually, is set to close temporarily by the end of 2025. The renovation plans include expanding entryways and improving restroom facilities, which are integral to creating a more welcoming and safe environment. This project aligns with the city’s community-first public safety approach, incorporating principles from crime prevention through environmental design to improve visibility and navigation within the library.

During the closure, library services will be relocated to the Haleigh Que Brown Community Center, a venue with strong community ties that offers a range of programming and services. The center is known for its historical significance and will host collections of books, DVDs, and newspapers, as well as various programs for children, teens, and adults. Collaborative programming with the MLK Recreation Center aims to ensure a robust schedule despite the smaller space.

Concern was raised regarding the programming capacity of the Haleigh Que Brown Community Center, given its size compared to the Rondo Library. While the center may not accommodate the full volume of visitors simultaneously, the board is committed to maintaining a similar volume of programming. Strategies to maximize available space and resources include partnerships with the MLK Recreation Center and Penumbra Theater.

The board discussed the importance of timing the transition during December, a period of typically lower library usage, to minimize disruption to programs for children and families.

Financial support for the renovations is confirmed, with allocated funding for 2025 and additional funding in 2026 to cover leasing costs. While a targeted reopening date remains uncertain, the board is working to finalize details and expects more information to be available early in 2026. A comprehensive communication strategy is in place to inform the community about the transition, using the library’s website, email newsletters, social media, and direct signage at the library.

Discussions during the meeting also addressed the historical context of displacement within the Rondo community and the importance of trust. The board emphasized maintaining a presence at the University and Dale location during the renovation, and a welcoming event is planned for January to engage the community during this transitional phase.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted the significance of community feedback in shaping the renovation plans. The board acknowledged the importance of addressing community concerns, with efforts to ensure transit accessibility to the temporary location and discussions about potentially adjusting the Circulator bus service to better accommodate families.

In a separate agenda item, the board recognized Beth Burns for her service as the city’s representative to the Metropolitan Library Service Agency Board of Trustees since 2017. Burns was commended for her advocacy for a budget allocation formula focused on equity. She expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared insights about her experience on the board, highlighting the unique position of city library systems compared to county systems.

The board members expressed admiration for Burns’ leadership and dedication, with comments underscoring the challenges faced during her tenure and her commitment to the library system. The resolution recognizing her contributions was adopted with no dissent.
