St. Paul Park Seeks Applicants for City Council Vacancy Following Resignation
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent St. Paul Park City Council meeting, the council announced a vacancy following the resignation of Council member Bruce Zenner due to personal reasons. Applications for this position will be accepted until March 5th, with the possibility of a new appointment as early as the March 17th council meeting. The council will determine the process for selecting a new member after reviewing the applications, which could include interviews.
A key presentation was made by the new executive director of Basic Needs Inc., Opie Penala, who highlighted the organization’s contributions to the community over the past year. Basic Needs Inc. has distributed over 680,000 pounds of food through its free market, supported 160,000 people, and provided $10,000 in thrift store vouchers for emergency situations. The organization also hosted a successful community resource fair, The Pit Stop, which saw participation from over 400 people and collaboration with 40 agencies. Penala extended an invitation to the council and community to join upcoming events, including the Fashion for a Cause Gala and the “Badges vs. Hoses” fundraiser.
The council also discussed the possibility of revisiting infrastructure improvements, specifically the city’s overpass, as part of long-term planning efforts. These discussions are in collaboration with local mayors and state representatives, with an emphasis on managing growth in the surrounding areas without excessively impacting residents. Additionally, the potential dredging of Lions Levy Park was mentioned, with hopes of securing grant money for the project.
