Stanhope School Board Celebrates Student Anti-Hate Initiative, Approves Regionalization Study Grant
- Meeting Overview:
The Stanhope School Board meeting highlighted student engagement and district improvements, with a standout presentation by middle school students participating in the “Hate the Hate” competition. The board also approved a $124,000 grant for a regionalization study and addressed various operational updates, including personnel changes and future planning.
A key highlight of the meeting was a presentation by middle school students who created a four-part podcast for the “Hate the Hate” competition. The podcast aimed to express their school community’s stance against various forms of hatred. Due to scheduling conflicts, the students presented their project through a video rather than attending in person. In the video, the students introduced themselves and provided insights into their creative process. The board members received the presentation positively, and the podcast is now available on the school’s website.
Another development was the approval of a grant for a regionalization study, amounting to approximately $124,000. This grant is intended to explore the potential benefits and challenges of regionalizing the school district. Although the funding had not yet been accessed, the board discussed forming a committee to guide the study, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in the process. The board president highlighted these next steps.
The meeting also included updates on various capital and maintenance projects. The board reported that the capital and maintenance reserves were in good standing at the end of the year. Several summer projects were initiated, including addressing parking issues, the renovation of the science room, which began with a complete demolition, and the procurement of new desks and chairs expected to arrive before the new academic year. Plans for upgrading the school courtyard were mentioned, to be undertaken after the completion of the science lab project.
In personnel matters, the board recognized Mrs. Plo for her 14 years of service to the district. Her contributions were acknowledged with gratitude as the board moved through various employment approvals, including the retroactive approval of a part-time custodian for the next school year. The agenda also included substitute approvals, with discussions reflecting the comprehensive nature of the personnel updates and the need for clarity on roles within the district.
The superintendent’s report included the confirmation of one incident of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) since the last meeting and highlighted successful events such as field days for elementary and middle school students. These events, freed from academic pressures, allowed students to engage in enjoyable competitions, supported by the Home and School Association (HSA), which provided t-shirts and organized a barbecue lunch. Additionally, the Battle of the Books competition was a highlight, with sixth-grade teams achieving first and second place, and a seventh and eighth-grade team securing second place.
The eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., was noted for its success, despite rainy weather, with the superintendent expressing intentions to continue the trip in future years. The concert band received an excellent rating at a recent adjudication, and kindergarten and preschool orientations were well attended. End-of-year activities, including the eighth-grade graduation, were celebrated without weather disruptions, and the HSA’s sponsorship of a barbecue added to the festive atmosphere.
In discussions about student policies, concerns were raised about potential changes to recess for middle school students, with parents voicing apprehension over eliminating recess for seventh and eighth graders. The board clarified that recess is mandatory for younger grades and that discussions are ongoing regarding options for middle school students, such as providing choices between outdoor recess or alternative activities. The board acknowledged that no final decisions had been made, considering the current environment and preferences of middle school students.
The meeting also addressed the successful execution of the 5K Charger Run, organized by the HSA, which was well-attended despite challenging weather conditions. The event aimed to boost community participation in future years.
