Stanhope School Board Discusses Possible Building Purchase Amid Staff Compensation Changes
- Meeting Overview:
The Stanhope School Board meeting addressed topics including a potential building purchase for educational services and new sidebar agreements affecting staff compensation. The board discussed these matters alongside other agenda items, such as updates on curriculum changes and recognitions of outstanding educators.
A focal point of the meeting was the discussion concerning the acquisition of a neighboring building to expand educational services. Despite receiving a letter from the Department of Education indicating that the school had not followed proper procedures in pursuing the building purchase, the board remained committed to exploring the opportunity. They officially declared their intent to research the acquisition further. The board emphasized that the acquisition would enable the expansion of preschool instructional coaching, which already covers 19 programs across seven districts.
Another development was the establishment of sidebar agreements to ensure full compensation for teachers. One agreement guarantees that teachers receive their full 42-minute preparation periods, despite class periods being 41 minutes long. Another agreement provides hourly compensation for teachers supervising field trips beyond normal contractual hours, excluding overnight trips, which are addressed separately.
The dual role of the superintendent, who also serves as the principal, was confirmed to continue for the current year. A special resolution was passed to maintain this arrangement while the board assesses future steps related to the building purchase deliberations.
Recognition was given to two individuals for their exceptional contributions to the school district. Mr. Dudo was celebrated as the governor’s educator of the year for 2025-2026, praised for his work in physical education and health, as well as his positive relationships with students and staff. His previous experience as a paraprofessional working with challenging students was also highlighted. Miss Grace Schmeidhouser was honored as the educational service professional of the year, acknowledged for her 13-year contribution to the district in roles such as the child study team and the main office. Her recognition was timely as she transitions into semi-retirement.
Curriculum updates were also a key topic, with changes in middle school specials programs discussed. Art, STEM, and music teachers will now be full-time, allowing students to participate in four days of specials each week instead of two. Plans for a student choice model in the fourth quarter were introduced, enabling students to select from three specials. The collaborative effort involved in this curriculum development was highlighted, with excitement expressed about the opportunities it would bring.
The board reviewed educational action items, specifically approving field trips for the 2025-2026 school year. These trips include community-based instruction opportunities for students with disabilities, aimed at developing life skills through real-world experiences. The board expressed support for these initiatives, which were affirmed through a roll call vote.
Personnel action items were also discussed, with Mr. Hagemann delegated hiring authority. Two individuals requested leaves of absence, but it was confirmed there were sufficient personnel to cover their duties. Concerns were raised about resignations in fine arts positions, but the board expressed optimism about revisiting these programs in the future.
In terms of policy, the board addressed the next steps for an artificial intelligence policy. The plan will be shared with the community following a second reading approval, with ongoing efforts to integrate AI into the educational framework. Future presentations are planned for staff and parents to further these initiatives.
Business services items included submitting a project application for a new parking lot behind the building. The superintendent and an architect plan to meet with local government officials to discuss the project.
During new business, a board member expressed gratitude towards the Home School Association (HSA) for their extensive fundraising efforts, noting their contributions compared to other districts. Another member thanked Mrs. Smith for organizing a successful World Culture Night, which saw increased participation compared to previous years.
