Stewartville City Council Moves Forward with Key Development Plans and Community Projects
- Meeting Overview:
The Stewartville City Council meeting focused on the approval of development plans, selection of a construction management firm for the library expansion, and various community events and updates. Key decisions included advancing the general development plan for G’s 9th subdivision and approving a preliminary contract for the library expansion project, alongside Mayor King’s announcement of a $200,000 grant to study regional infrastructure needs.
The council’s decision to approve the general development plan (GDP) and preliminary plat for G’s 9th subdivision marked a key step in local development. The planning commission had conducted a public hearing earlier in the month and recommended approval, contingent on city engineering review comments. The developer expressed intentions to commence construction by late summer.
Turning to the library expansion project, the council approved a preliminary contract with Beni, a construction management firm, based on their experience and positive references from similar projects. The committee had interviewed two firms, Reliable and Beni, after receiving proposals from six companies. Beni’s bid came in at $229,000, while Reliable’s was slightly higher at $245,125. The staff recommended an initial pre-construction contract not exceeding $5,000 to finalize the project concept in alignment with architectural plans. A council member noted the potential for cost savings and a reduced management fee if the project timeline was shortened.
In addition to these development initiatives, the Mayor highlighted a significant announcement regarding a $200,000 grant awarded in collaboration with the cities of Byron and Lewon. This grant will fund a study on the region’s water capacity and electrical needs to accommodate potential data centers.
Community events also featured prominently in the meeting. The Mayor expressed condolences to the families of several community members and congratulated the graduating class of 2025. He emphasized the achievements of local sports teams, noting that the baseball team would participate in the state tournament for the first time in the school’s history. The Mayor also announced the Bear Cave concert featuring the BT band, and informed attendees about the weekly Scooby Cruisers car shows and the farmers market at the United Methodist Church.
Additionally, the Mayor discussed the upcoming retirement party for Mark Podin, a dedicated volunteer fire department member for 37 years. Scheduled for June 11th at Adam’s Tavern on the Greens, the event will include cake and other refreshments, celebrating Podin’s extensive contributions to the community.
Further updates came from the City Administrator, who highlighted increased media attention due to commercial growth, and the Finance Officer, who reported on the information-gathering phase of a water meter replacement project. The City Engineer provided insights into ongoing construction challenges related to paving on 11th Street, while the Library Director shared plans for a sewing circle event and a STEM kit for youth.
The council also approved a variance request for the Soranos at 1176 6th Street Northeast, allowing them to replace a deteriorating porch with a new design that brings it further back from the property line than the existing ramp.
Lastly, the council granted a temporary liquor license for the Chamber of Commerce to sell beer during the Summerfest 2025 dance at Barricade Park, alongside street closures for the parade. This approval ensures the smooth execution of the event, maintaining the tradition of community celebration.
