- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Sunny Isles Beach City Commission meeting, debate centered around a resolution concerning sister cities from countries that support designated terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The meeting also touched on various city improvements, including upgrades to the CCTV system, vehicle purchases, and an ordinance addressing flooding and mosquito breeding.
The most heated discussion of the meeting revolved around a resolution to oppose sister cities from countries supporting Hamas and Hezbollah. Animosity flared as one speaker accused four commissioners of tarnishing themselves with dishonor by not supporting the resolution, alleging that they were putting personal grievances above the common good. The speaker also referred to Congressional anti-Semites. This inflammatory accusation led to a broader conversation about the rules of conduct during the meeting and whether certain statements were disrespectful.
Another resident accused the mayor of supporting an individual linked to Hamas and challenged commission members over accusations of anti-Semitism. The chair of the meeting had to remind residents to adhere to the rules of conduct amidst this charged debate.
Aside from the controversy surrounding the sister city resolution, the commission approved several items aimed at improving city services and infrastructure. A resolution was passed to upgrade the Government Center’s CCTV system in collaboration with Millenniproducts. Additionally, the city’s vehicle fleet will see an expansion with the purchase of two 2023 4×4 Jeep Gladiator vehicles from Kendall Jeep and four Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vehicles from Seminole Toyota. The meeting also ratified the purchase of two water pumps from Thompson Pump and Manufacturing.
In terms of legislative changes, an ordinance was repealed that affected Chapter 17 of the code of ordinances concerning computers and electronic communications. Furthermore, the city’s operating and capital improvement budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year was amended. The commission also approved a mutual aid agreement with the City of Miami for participation in the Miami Police Auto Crimes Task Force.
Another resolution approved was the First Amendment to the agreement with MC Causley LLC, which will provide structural inspection and plans review services on an as-needed basis. Additionally, the commission ratified the use of forfeiture funds from the Department of Justice to purchase and upgrade a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and to make further improvements to the CCTV system at the Government Center.
During the meeting, the commission sought clarification on specific operational items, such as the installation of smaller pumps and the ongoing work on Center Island. They discussed the nature of drilling wells and strategies to combat flooding issues.
Public comments addressed both praise and criticism of the city’s administration. One resident lauded the city’s services, while another expressed dissatisfaction with spending and inaction regarding a charter company on the island. The latter also echoed sentiments of shame and disappointment over the sister city resolution.
On a more celebratory note, a special presentation from a sister city delegation from Hala, Uruguay, marked Uruguayan Independence Day. The delegation extended an invitation to the commissioners to visit their city and presented a gift to Sunny Isles Beach. In recognition of the importance of recreation and wellness, the mayor proclaimed July as Parks and Recreation month.
The meeting also saw the deferral of item 3A, which concerned inviting a representative from Miami-Dade Fire to discuss the need for an additional ambulance. The commissioners agreed to invite Miami-Dade Fire to a workshop for a comprehensive service overview. Commissioner Jerry Joseph introduced an ordinance to remediate swell areas to prevent flooding and mosquito breeding, highlighting the need for property owners to address standing water issues. However, the proposed ordinance faced scrutiny over enforcement and potential conflicts with existing utilities.
Furthermore, the commission discussed the regulations surrounding fireworks, confirming that they are permitted on New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July, as per State Statute. However, fireworks are banned in public parks and on the beach. Enforcement challenges, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods, were acknowledged.
Concerns about speeding in Golden Shores led to a debate over the installation of additional speed bumps. The commission recognized the need for traffic calming measures but faced hurdles due to the area being a county road, requiring county approval.
