Sussex County Tackles Broadband and Healthcare Expansion
- Meeting Overview:
The Sussex County Board of Commissioners addressed a range of issues in their March 27th, 2024 meeting, emphasizing the county’s infrastructure, healthcare services, and the conduct of public officials. Significant discussions centered around efforts to improve local broadband access, the opening of a new psychiatric care facility, and troubling allegations against a university president. Additionally, the meeting saw the adoption of the amended 2024 budget, the approval of bond ordinances for county improvements, and the establishment of rules for public meeting conduct.
High on the agenda was the county’s initiative to enhance broadband access, a key infrastructure concern. This plan includes identifying areas lacking internet connectivity and securing grants for updates.
On the healthcare front, the grand opening of Insight Health was a focal point. This facility, bolstered by $300,000 in ARPA funds from the county, is set to provide comprehensive psychiatric care to children and adults.
The board’s attendance at a tourism expo, engaging with local farmers, highlighted efforts to sustain and promote agricultural interests.
However, overshadowing these positive developments were serious allegations against the president of a local university. Accusations of sexual harassment, threats, blackmail, financial mismanagement, and the presence of a gun in the president’s office prompted calls from the public for the board to take decisive action. Concerns over the decline in university registration and the withdrawal of staff applications further intensified the scrutiny on the university administration. The board assured the public of its engagement with the university’s Board of Trustees to address the situation.
The meeting also touched on the need for infrastructure improvements, with discussions surrounding a Veterans Memorial project and the securing of funding for such initiatives. The board’s active role in a Farmland preservation tour, evaluating the potential for internships or apprenticeships, and visits to educational facilities like Sussex Tech to assess infrastructure needs, including outdated greenhouses, were noted.
Public decorum was another area of focus. A resolution was proposed to establish rules of conduct for public meetings. The adoption of this resolution, following a debate and roll call vote, suggested a commitment to fostering a respectful environment for public discourse.
Concerns over community safety and accountability were evident in residents’ remarks. A discontinued bus stop on Greenville Road raised safety concerns for students, leading to a call for reinstatement and potential route alternatives. Additionally, the public expressed discomfort with the president of the community college reportedly carrying a firearm on campus during a period of tension, demanding accountability from the board.
The board’s efficient handling of the budget process received commendations, highlighting a positive acknowledgment of fiscal responsibility. The auditor praised the good process, and the importance of maintaining a statutory percentage in the fund balance was mentioned. Moreover, the board approved various bond ordinances to finance capital improvements and equipment acquisition.
Other operational matters included the sale of property in Stanhope, the finalization of which brought a deposit to the county. A training program for equipment operators was discussed, with successful negotiations providing free training from Caterpillar for selected individuals. The board also reported on the Ash tree removal program, detailing the number of trees removed and the program’s budget.
