Taunton Celebrates Sixth Softball Championship and Early College Program Success
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Taunton School Committee meeting, the celebration of the Lady Tigers softball team’s sixth consecutive Division 1 state championship and the expansion of the Early College program in collaboration with UMass Dartmouth highlighted the district’s achievements. Discussions also included budget approvals, strategic initiatives, and plans for future events.
One item at the meeting was the commendation of the Lady Tigers softball team for their outstanding performance. The team secured their sixth consecutive Division 1 state championship with an 11-8 victory over Attleboro. A standout player, Bella, was recognized for her exceptional season statistics, including 34 RBIs, 42 runs, and 22 extra base hits over 21 games. Bella, who is a four-time state champion and a two-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic selection, has committed to the University of South Carolina. The presence and support of school board members during the team’s championship run were acknowledged as key factors in fostering community spirit.
Superintendent John J. Cabral highlighted a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing a sense of belonging within Taunton Public Schools. Participation in the DESE’s Belonging Fellowship focused on strengthening relationships with caregivers and improving communication and family engagement. The superintendent expressed gratitude to the staff, particularly Stephanie Hoy, for leading the initiative, which involved numerous meetings and collaborative efforts.
The committee also discussed the successful expansion of the Early College program, a collaboration with UMass Dartmouth that allows high school juniors and seniors to earn college credits in pre-medical and pre-nursing pathways. Changes to the early college pathways with Bristol Community College were announced, including a new course option, CAS 103 Career Exploration and Discovery, designed for ninth graders to familiarize them with college expectations. Two students, Adelza Semedo and Jayla Soares, shared their experiences in the program, emphasizing the support they received and their successful navigation of college-level coursework. Both students, who are English as a Second Language learners, highlighted the program’s role in preparing them for future academic pursuits. The program’s impact was underscored by the growing participation rate, with approximately one in eight high school students currently involved, and projections suggesting further expansion.
Discussions then shifted to financial matters, beginning with a request for reimbursement from the high school for $9,443, covering expenses for student activities such as the junior and senior proms. Superintendent Cabral presented the request, which was unanimously approved after a brief discussion. The committee also authorized the disposal of surplus textbooks deemed unsuitable for use, as well as a special education legal expense approval for April totaling $12,277.50. The significant legal expenses over the fiscal year were acknowledged, with a total of $89,193.34 spent on student services for the year.
In addition, the committee approved a budget for the “Coaching for Change” initiative and addressed various bills payable, including payments for instructional technology, professional development, and curriculum purchases. Mrs. Shaves initiated discussions on specific expenditures, including payments for Chromebooks and maintenance supplies, which were clarified and subsequently approved.
Superintendent Cabral reported on the successful completion of the third “coffee and conversation” event, which saw high attendance and significant participation from multilingual families. The next event was scheduled to continue fostering an inclusive atmosphere for family engagement with school officials.
The meeting also featured a presentation of a new logo for Taunton Public Schools, designed by a Taunton High School graphic arts teacher, which received national recognition. This logo is part of the district’s strategic plan to symbolize the student journey and foster a cohesive identity.
Finally, a letter was read praising the speech and debate program at Martin Middle School for its positive impact on students, particularly highlighting the personal growth of a student named Ava Miller. A motion was made to send a letter of recognition to Mr. Daley, the program’s advisor, acknowledging the program’s success.
