Taunton School Committee Applauds Early College Program and Championship Softball Team
- Meeting Overview:
The Taunton School Committee meeting highlighted the district’s burgeoning early college program and celebrated the achievements of its student-athletes. The committee praised local student-athlete Bella and the Lady Tigers softball team for their accomplishments, while also providing updates on key educational initiatives, including the strategic growth of the early college program in collaboration with UMass Dartmouth and Bristol Community College.
The meeting prominently featured the district’s early college program, which has received recognition from UMass Dartmouth, allowing juniors and seniors to earn credits in pre-medical and pre-nursing pathways. This initiative reflects Taunton Public Schools’ commitment to academic excellence and providing students with opportunities to gain college credits while still in high school. The program’s growth was further emphasized by changes to pathways in collaboration with Bristol Community College, offering ninth graders a foundational course, CAS 103, Career Exploration and Discovery. This course aims to introduce students to college life and prepare them for academic success.
Two students, Ms. Adelza Samedo and Ms. Jayla Soares, shared their experiences in the early college program, having completed multiple courses through BCC and currently enrolled in a Personal Finance course with Endicott College. They discussed overcoming initial anxieties and credited support from academic tutors and the program’s staff for their success. The program’s impact was further highlighted by an academic tutor, who emphasized the comprehensive support provided to students, from academic guidance to emotional support.
The Taunton School Committee expressed interest in learning more about the program’s benefits, with a suggestion for Superintendent John J. Cabral to schedule a presentation in the fall to further explore the program’s impact on students.
In addition to the academic accomplishments, the meeting celebrated local student-athlete Bella, recognizing her softball achievements, including 22 extra base hits through 21 games. Bella, a four-time state champion and two-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic selection, has committed to the University of South Carolina, maintaining an impressive 4.61 GPA while volunteering with the Taunton Girls Softball League. Her commitment to academics and athletics was commended by the committee.
The Lady Tigers softball team was similarly honored for winning their sixth consecutive Division One state championship. Their 11-8 victory over Attleboro was noted as the highest-scoring Division One softball state championship in MIAA history. The committee acknowledged the support of school board members during the championship run, emphasizing its positive impact on community spirit. A celebration for the Lady Tigers is planned for July, recognizing their extraordinary achievements.
Further discussions during the meeting included updates on strategic initiatives, such as the Taunton Public Schools’ participation in the DESE’s Belonging Fellowship, aimed at fostering a sense of belonging within the school community. This initiative focused on building relationships with caregivers, enhancing communication, and promoting family engagement. Superintendent Cabral praised the staff involved, particularly Director of Student Services Stephanie Hoye, for their dedication to fostering family partnerships.
The committee also reviewed the success of the third coffee and conversation event, held on June 4th at Dighton Farms and Stables in East Taunton. This event, featuring multilingual participation and interpreter services, aimed to strengthen community ties by engaging families in their neighborhoods. The next event is scheduled for Hopewell Park, continuing the initiative’s goal of creating welcoming environments for family participation.
Administrative business covered updates on the upcoming school year planner, with meetings scheduled for the second and fourth Wednesdays of July. Superintendent Cabral emphasized the importance of scheduling for summer months and invited school board members to a retreat in August at the Cove in Fall River, highlighting potential discussions on policy updates. The committee was informed about the MASC annual conference in November, set to occur in Danvers, and a planned second retreat in January focusing on governance and team cohesion.
The meeting included a report from the finance and law subcommittee, detailing approvals for student activities expenses, surplus textbook disposal, special education expenses, and other financial matters, all passing unanimously. A letter from parent Tanya Miller expressing gratitude for the Speech and Debate Program at Martin Middle School was introduced, highlighting its positive impact on her daughter, Ava. The committee expressed a desire to send a letter of appreciation to Mr. Daley, who oversees the initiative, recognizing the impressive skills developed by the students.
