The most notable focus of the meeting was on Erin Travers, whose contributions to Martin School have made her a nurturing figure within the community. Travers is affectionately known as the “unofficial mom” due to her unwavering support and involvement in the students’ lives. She has participated in various school initiatives, offering support through challenging times, including personal gestures like visiting a student in the hospital. Her dedication was described as boundless, with a speaker expressing gratitude for her energy and commitment, stating, “Thank you for being the kind of educator that makes a school feel like a community.”

Following this, Principal Jamie Pereira from Martin Middle School recognized the positive impact of instructional coach Megan Fernando. Celebrated for her transformative role in the educational experience of both students and teachers, Fernando was noted for her intelligence and passion. Her history as a fifth-grade math teacher was commended, alongside her exceptional ability to engage and uplift educators. Her creative teaching methods, such as “Fraction Friday” and the “March Madness, I Ready Challenge,” were highlighted as examples of her innovative approach. Fernando’s ability to foster trust and respect was encapsulated in the sentiment, “She never makes anyone feel that they are less than.”

The committee also heard from Principal Jamie Pereira, who acknowledged Mr. Ian Daly and the Martin Speech and Debate team. The growth of the program under Daly’s guidance has been remarkable, with students now competing against prestigious schools across Massachusetts. Pereira praised Daly’s dedication and mentorship, emphasizing his role in building students’ confidence and skills. The speech and debate team was recognized for their competitive successes and the positive changes in their academic performance and commitment to school, illustrating Daly’s significant impact on the students.

At Taunton Alternative High School, Principal Bert Delaney recognized senior David Fetti for his academic achievements and leadership qualities. Fetti, noted as the top senior academically, was commended for his positive attitude and willingness to help classmates. His acceptance to Bristol Community College, where he plans to pursue a career in public service as a firefighter or police officer, underscored his dedication to contributing to the community beyond high school.

The meeting also highlighted the achievements of students at Bennett Elementary School, where Principal Eard introduced three students: Hopper Bernardino, Eve Alivera, and Amelia Pereira. Each was commended for their leadership and compassion within the school community. Eve was recognized for her empathetic support of a grieving peer, Hopper for her thoughtful actions to include classmates, and Amelia for her natural leadership. These students exemplified the values of support and positivity, creating a welcoming environment at their school.

Mkei Elementary School’s safety patrol team, coordinated by teacher Alice Kulis since 2019, was also recognized for their critical role in maintaining safety and order. The 37-member team assists during arrival and dismissal times, helping younger students and ensuring orderly transitions. Kulis expressed pride in the maturity and responsibility exhibited by these students, acknowledging their contribution to the welcoming school environment.

Further recognition was given to individuals involved in the Construction Craft Labor (CCL) program, coordinated by Darla Hartung. Despite his absence, Eric Turjan was acknowledged for his contributions, including pursuing additional licenses and certifications to enhance educational opportunities. Hartung praised Turjan’s leadership in facilitating real-world projects for students, resulting in significant cost savings for the district. Students Donnie Shad, Max Menson, Troy Holt, and Andrew Tucker were each celebrated for their unique contributions and dedication to the program.

Special education coordinator Kimberly Morton nominated Cameron Pendle for his exceptional work within the TOPS program, which serves students aged 18 to 22.
