Taunton School Committee Celebrates Student and Staff Achievements in a Heartfelt Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Taunton School Committee meeting on May 13, 2026, prominently celebrated the achievements of students and staff, showcasing talents, perseverance, and contributions to the school community.
The meeting’s centerpiece was the extensive recognition of students who have made notable contributions to their schools and community. Braden Johnson, a senior at Taunton Alternative High School, was particularly celebrated for his exceptional representation of the school at the Student Government Day at the state house. This achievement marked the first time in 13 years that a student from his school participated in this prestigious event. Braden’s social studies teacher commended his passion for politics and his respectful engagement with differing opinions, skills that came to the fore as he spoke in front of influential politicians. His quiet leadership and positive impact on his peers were also highlighted, with his family receiving thanks for their role in his development.
Alongside Braden, Greg, a student who has been involved in the school’s robotics team, was recognized for his contributions. Greg’s enthusiasm for the program and his aspirations to study engineering at Purdue University were noted. He impressed the committee with his well-researched presentation on the sustainability and growth of the robotics program.
The meeting also celebrated the achievements of students in the world language program. A total of 160 students participated in national exams in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Latin, with several receiving medals for their performance. The committee took pride in acknowledging the students who achieved bronze, silver, and gold distinctions, as well as the efforts of world language teachers in fostering multilingual capabilities.
In addition to student achievements, the meeting dedicated significant time to recognizing the dedication and impact of staff members. The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) program staff were particularly commended for their commitment to supporting students facing complex challenges. The speaker highlighted the metaphor of a torch in the Taunton Public Schools logo, symbolizing hope and resilience, and praised the TLC staff for embodying these qualities.
Several staff members were individually recognized for their contributions. Erica, an academic tutor, and Shawn, a social worker, were acknowledged for stepping up during a period when all counselors were on parental leave. Their initiative and compassion were emphasized as important to the school’s mission.
Principal Jennifer Peters expressed gratitude for the dedication of teachers throughout the school year. Among those recognized was Laura Anselmo, a second-grade special education teacher at Harold H. Gallaghan Elementary School, who was praised for her tireless efforts in supporting students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and mentoring new teachers.
The meeting also spotlighted Deborah Johar from MKI School for her outstanding contributions. Described as versatile and selfless, Deborah’s efforts in making students feel safe and supported were celebrated. Her impact was noted as significant for both students and colleagues.
The Taunton Public Virtual Academy also received recognition, with Principal Elizabeth Rodriguez acknowledging the exceptional team behind the academy’s success. The staff’s resilience and adaptability in facing the unique challenges of a non-traditional learning environment were commended.
