Taunton School Committee Faces Criticism Over Staff Pay and Ends Longtime TASK Program
- Meeting Overview:
During a recent Taunton School Committee meeting, concerns over inadequate staff compensation and the discontinuation of the Taunton Area School to Careers (TASK) program dominated the discussion. Members of the public and committee alike voiced frustrations about the discrepancy in pay for secretaries and support staff, as well as the implications of ending a 30-year partnership with TASK, which had been vital for providing job skills training to vulnerable students from low-income families.
The public comment period was particularly charged, with several speakers highlighting the important roles that secretaries and support staff play within the school district. A speaker with over 20 years of service as a secretary lamented the minimal improvements in their hourly wage over the years, emphasizing the financial insecurities faced by many heading into retirement. They urged the committee to recognize and rectify the undervaluation of secretarial roles within the district.
Another major point of contention was the abrupt decision to sever ties with the TASK program. A community advocate described the move as “disheartening,” arguing that the program’s absence would negatively impact students who relied on it for valuable work experience and career preparation. The speaker implored the committee to reconsider this decision, stressing the program’s significance to Taunton Public Schools and its students.
In addition to these issues, a portion of the meeting was dedicated to the evaluation of Superintendent John J. Cabral. Committee members assessed his performance across various categories, including instructional leadership and community engagement. While the superintendent received generally positive evaluations, with some members rating him as proficient or exemplary, there were calls for improvements in specific areas such as collaboration on curriculum development and addressing student safety and emotional health.
The committee also tackled the potential relocation of John F. Parker Middle School to Hamilton Street. While some members supported this move, citing benefits such as increased capacity for high school students, others voiced concerns about the financial implications, especially in light of budget constraints and the upcoming expiration of the Student Opportunity Act. The discussion acknowledged the need to balance fiscal responsibility with educational needs, ultimately leading to a unanimous vote to proceed with the relocation, though the language was amended to allow flexibility in utilizing the space.
The meeting further highlighted the importance of fair compensation and working conditions for support staff. Several speakers described the challenges faced by school secretaries and other staff members, emphasizing the extensive responsibilities they shoulder and the inadequacy of their compensation. The call for equitable pay was a recurring theme, with demands for the committee to address disparities within the district.
In response to these concerns, there was a strong desire for the committee to engage with staff and consider their needs in future negotiations.
Another topic of note was the proposal to enhance family and community engagement through the development of a new district website and the reinstatement of Superintendent Cabral’s weekly newsletter. These initiatives aimed to improve communication and ensure families are informed about available resources and district developments. The committee acknowledged the need for better coordination and access to information.
The committee accepted several donations, totaling over $36,000, which included contributions of monetary gifts, personal care items, and food baskets. The acknowledgment of these donations underscored the community’s role in supporting Taunton Public Schools, especially during the holiday season.
