Taunton School Committee Faces Tie in Chair Election, Appoints New Leadership
- Meeting Overview:
The Taunton School Committee’s first meeting of 2026 was marked by a contested election for the chairperson position, resulting in a tie, and subsequent leadership appointments that set the stage for the year’s agenda. The meeting also addressed issues such as student behavioral challenges and committee assignments.
The election for the chairperson position was a focal point, with two candidates presenting their visions for leadership. Dr. Dlo, supported by some members, emphasized his prior accomplishments, including improved graduation rates and enhanced school security measures. He advocated for fiscal responsibility, community pride, and collaborative efforts, stating, “the kids that come before us are not just school committee kids. They are city council kids. They’re zoning board kids, planning board kids. They’re everybody’s kids.” His emphasis on service-oriented leadership resonated with some committee members. Meanwhile, Mrs. Sh. highlighted her extensive experience within the Taunton Public Schools system, spanning nearly five decades. She touted her background in educational leadership and curriculum, promising a fresh perspective for the committee.
Despite compelling arguments from both candidates, the vote ended in a deadlock, with four votes each for and against Dr. Dlo, thus failing to reach the necessary majority. This impasse prompted the committee to shift their focus to Mrs. Sh.’s nomination, seeking resolution in the leadership election.
Following this contentious vote, the committee successfully elected a new chair, Mr. Shabs, through a unanimous decision in a subsequent round of voting. This marked a resolution in the leadership dilemma, allowing the committee to proceed with other organizational matters. Christine Fagan was unanimously elected as secretary.
In addition to leadership elections, the meeting saw the presentation of the student advisory committee’s report by Isaiah Wendell of Taunton High School. Wendell informed the committee of the ongoing Chromebook distributions to ninth-grade students. The report also outlined key academic milestones, including the approaching midterms and finals, and the observance of Martin Luther King Day.
During the public input segment, Heather Bailey Gregorius voiced concerns about the treatment of students facing behavioral challenges. She criticized the stigmatization of these students as “monsters” and advocated for a more supportive educational environment. Gregorius highlighted the systemic issues contributing to these behaviors, including long waitlists for essential services and the division among parents. Her appeal for increased support emphasized the need for the committee to address educational support rather than punitive measures.
The meeting progressed with the assignment of chairs and members to various subcommittees, a task that underscored the committee’s emphasis on transparency and balanced participation. Notable appointments included Melissa Santos as chair of the Curriculum Committee and Dr. Dlo leading the Community Outreach Committee. Despite some light-hearted exchanges regarding the selection process, the committee focused on ensuring fair distribution of responsibilities while maintaining clarity on potential conflicts of interest.
A discussion arose concerning the approval of bills amounting to $1,36,116, with Dr. Dlo requesting acknowledgment of his position related to a specific payment due to his role with Pride, Inc. This led to an amendment in the motion.
The meeting also addressed Mrs. Santos’s concerns over potential conflicts of interest due to her MTA affiliation. This prompted a proposal to seek legal clarification and defer decisions on bargaining committees until further investigation. The committee aimed to ensure decisions were made in the best interest of the school system.
