Taunton School Committee Votes to Transition to Free Full-Day Preschool by 2026-2027
- Meeting Overview:
In a move, the Taunton School Committee unanimously approved a plan to transition the district’s preschool program to a free full-day model by the 2026-2027 school year. The decision aims to eliminate tuition fees, which currently range from $0 to $4,125 annually, and leverage additional Chapter 70 funding, projected at approximately $600,000 per year.
Superintendent John J. Cabral outlined the current structure of the tuition-based program, which serves around 147 students. The change to a free model is expected to ease financial burdens on families while enhancing program funding. The discussion also highlighted the adoption of a lottery system for admissions to ensure equitable access, with current enrollment figures showing a modest waitlist of about ten students for general education spots. The committee expressed enthusiasm for the proposal, underlining its potential to strengthen the district’s educational offerings and community support.
The meeting also focused on the integration of new technology via the Parent Square and Smart Sites systems. The transition aims to streamline communication within the district, with a target implementation date set for July 1 following a January 1 or 2 project start. The new platform promises user-friendly design enhancements, improved accessibility, and a consolidated communication system that includes a mobile app for parents. The committee emphasized the importance of defining roles for content management to ensure timely and accurate information dissemination.
Safety concerns were also a prominent topic, particularly the need for vestibules at school entrances to enhance security. A commitment was made to prioritize vestibule construction, with an estimated budget of $100,000 allocated for this purpose. The urgency of addressing this issue was underscored by previous incidents highlighting security risks, leading to a consensus on its importance.
In addition, the committee reviewed the achievements of the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The growth of these programs over the past decade was notable, expanding from a single Chapter 74 program serving 30 to 40 students to nine programs now accommodating approximately 950 students. The CTE programs provide hands-on experiences in various fields, including early education and care, construction, and culinary arts, with a portion of students earning industry-recognized credentials.
The meeting also addressed various financial and operational topics, including the review of bills payable for FY26, amounting to $745,559.92. The committee scrutinized expenditures. An update on the Hamilton Street project was presented, which includes extensive renovations and code updates, with a motion to authorize kitchen appliance costs up to $555,000 receiving unanimous approval.
Other discussions included the impact of the Yonder Pouches initiative at Taunton High School, which led to improvements in academic performance and behavioral metrics. Superintendent Cabral shared data indicating increased student and staff attendance, a reduction in tardiness, and significant declines in disciplinary incidents.
