Taunton Schools Secure $50,000 Grant to Abolish Middle School Sports Fees
- Meeting Overview:
The Taunton School Committee meeting featured discussions on funding for middle school sports, student achievements, and infrastructure maintenance. The most notable development was the announcement of a $50,000 grant from the Play Ball Foundation aimed at eliminating participation fees for middle school sports. Other topics included the award of contracts for tennis court repairs and the recognition of a Taunton student as a national officer in the Skills USA program.
The meeting commenced with the Superintendent presenting a $50,000 grant from the Play Ball Foundation. This grant is intended to cover various expenses associated with middle school sports, including coaching, refereeing, uniforms, equipment, and transportation. The Superintendent emphasized that this funding would eliminate the need for participation fees, allowing students to partake in sports without financial barriers. The grant aligns with the district’s goal to foster feeder programs for high school sports and encourage teamwork and discipline among students.
Another major focus of the meeting was the discussion and approval of preventive maintenance for tennis courts at Taunton High School and the Oakland campus. The committee reviewed bids from vendors Sport Tech Surfaces, East Coast Seal Coating, and New England Seal Coating. The decision was made to award the high school court repairs to Sport Tech Surfaces due to their status as the lowest bidder. For the Oakland campus, East Coast Seal Coating was selected for the same reason. A total projected cost for both projects was estimated at approximately $149,500. Despite concerns about committing to the Oakland repairs due to the timeline and potential price increases, the committee approved awarding the bid to East Coast Seal Coating.
The committee also celebrated the achievements of Logan Rebello, a student recognized for his role as a national officer in the Skills USA program. Logan’s accomplishments in representing Massachusetts and advocating for career and technical education were highlighted. Miss Gibson, Logan’s culinary instructor, praised his dedication and success, while Logan expressed gratitude for the opportunities provided by Taunton Public Schools. The committee members extended their congratulations and discussed the potential provision of a procurement card for Logan.
In addition to the celebration of student achievements, the meeting addressed several administrative matters. The Superintendent provided updates on staffing levels, reporting a 90% staffing rate for the upcoming school year. He also discussed the evaluation process for the superintendent, which took place earlier in January. The superintendent received high marks, with 190 out of 200 points in the proficient/exemplary category. The evaluation praised his leadership in instructional and financial management and strategic planning for future sustainability.
The meeting also covered a variety of other topics, including the approval of bills payable for FY26, totaling $166,234. Questions were raised about specific expenses, such as a $6,000 charge for pillar construction services and a $9,000 charge for diversity training. The committee discussed the importance of ensuring that such professional development initiatives were accessible and beneficial to staff.
Another point of interest was the potential installation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at the Oakland campus. This suggestion was prompted by a citizen and sparked a discussion about liability concerns if a device were installed for outside groups. The committee agreed to investigate further and added this issue to the action item list for continued consideration.
The meeting concluded with an acknowledgment of ongoing efforts to explore additional savings and program restructuring, including the release of $6 billion in previously frozen federal entitlement funding by the US Department of Education. This funding includes FY26 entitlement grants, which the committee plans to utilize strategically.
