Taylor County Board Discusses Infrastructure Improvements and Seeks Public Input
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Taylor County Board of Commissioners meeting, public hearings focused on two proposed infrastructure projects to improve storm water management and road safety. These projects, with estimated costs totaling $15.6 million, are part of the county’s application for Community Development Block Grants Disaster Recovery funding for storm recovery efforts.
The first project is an elevated storm water improvement initiative, projected to cost $1.6 million. This involves constructing storm water improvements across 12 sites to mitigate flooding issues. The second project, estimated at $14 million, aims to pave and enhance storm water management along County Road 14, which serves as a critical evacuation route. The road, often described as narrow and crumbling, poses significant safety risks, especially during evacuations. Concerns were raised about the road’s unmarked sections and its frequent use by heavy vehicles, such as rock trucks and boats.
A board member highlighted the urgency of addressing the condition of County Road 14, noting its importance not only for regular traffic but also as a vital evacuation route. The proposed project includes paving approximately 10 miles of road and widening certain parts to enhance safety.
The board emphasized the need for these projects to be located in Low to Moderate Income (LMI) areas, as 80% of the funding must be allocated to such regions. While there was some uncertainty about whether the projects fall within these designated areas, the board acknowledged the competitive nature of securing funding and stressed the importance of the projects for local residents and their safety.
