- Meeting Overview:
The Temple Terrace Code Enforcement Board addressed a series of property violations with firm deadlines and fines during their recent meeting. The board was presented with multiple cases ranging from overgrown conditions to unauthorized construction work.
One of the issues discussed was a property on Mission Hills Avenue, cited for overgrown conditions. The code enforcement officer provided photographic evidence, and while no fine was imposed due to the violations being rectified before the hearing, the board emphasized the importance of maintaining properties to avoid such issues. In a similar vein, properties on Biltmore Avenue, 9851 Morris Glenway, and Park Avenue also faced overgrown conditions but avoided fines by coming into compliance before the session.
An unusual case involved a property on Wakula Drive, where compliance was hindered due to the owner’s passing. The board considered an extension but decided to enforce a compliance deadline, highlighting the seriousness with which they treat code violations, even in extraordinary circumstances.
The board also handled a case on Brentwood Drive, where unauthorized interior renovation and window replacement were underway. After a discussion about permit requirements and ongoing work, the board mandated correction of the violations by a set date, with a daily fine for non-compliance, underlining the importance of obtaining proper permits.
A property at 100027 North 52nd Street was found lacking essential services such as city garbage pick-up and hot and cold water, representing a significant health and safety concern. The board moved to impose a daily fine if the situation was not remedied by a designated date.
In a more lenient decision, the board granted Chelsea Jenkins a 30-day extension to address issues with wall staining and a support pole at her property on Gaston Drive. Another extension was granted for a property on Court, where roof work had begun after an earlier deadline was extended, showing the board’s willingness to accommodate reasonable requests for more time to comply.
The board’s new business included the announcement of a “Code Officer Appreciation Week” proclamation by the city council. Additionally, a high school teacher was introduced as a new alternate member, expressing a commitment to serve the community.
Safety concerns were a recurring theme, particularly in the discussion about a property on East 122nd Street, where an extension was requested to address a public nuisance violation following a fire six years prior.
A member shared experiences with the online form and recommended taking an ethics course.
