- Meeting Overview:
The Temple Terrace City Council has declared a state of emergency effective 6 p.m. Wednesday in response to the imminent threat posed by Hurricane Helen. This local declaration enables the city to access necessary resources and streamline internal processes such as payroll and procurement.
The decision to declare a state of emergency was made following discussions about the city’s preparedness for the storm. Officials emphasized that this declaration aligns Temple Terrace with the county and state emergency measures, allowing for coordinated efforts and efficient resource allocation. The City Manager is authorized to end the state of emergency as soon as it is deemed appropriate, with a maximum duration of seven days.
Council members and city staff discussed several key aspects of storm preparedness, including staffing the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), ensuring the functionality of drainage systems, and identifying public shelters. Staffing for the EOC will be adjusted based on updated storm information, with essential employees already notified of their roles. The city’s utilities teams have been proactive in checking pump stations, ensuring fuel availability for generators, and clearing potential drainage blockages to prevent flooding.
Residents were advised to stay informed through Hillsborough County’s updates on flood zones and potential evacuation orders. While Temple Terrace has not historically faced evacuation orders, the city’s public information officer will disseminate any relevant information swiftly if the situation changes.
Additionally, the availability of public shelters was addressed. Greco Middle School is designated as a county shelter for county and city employees, while Piso Elementary remains a public shelter. Temple Terrace police and fire departments will provide staffing support for these shelters if they are opened.
