Temple Terrace Residents Voice Strong Opposition to Water Fluoridation at City Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Temple Terrace City Council meeting on March 28, 2025, was marked by significant public discourse on the fluoridation of the city’s water supply. Residents expressed strong concerns over its potential health impacts, urging the council to reconsider the policy. This issue, alongside other community matters like stormwater management and land use amendments, highlighted the evening’s agenda.
A substantial portion of the meeting was devoted to public comments regarding water fluoridation, a contentious topic that drew passionate responses. The speaker argued that the supposed benefits of fluoridation were unsubstantiated and emphasized the cumulative nature of fluoride consumption. This individual, drawing on personal experiences tutoring children, noted an increase in ADHD and reduced IQ levels, questioning the rationale of compromising children’s cognitive abilities for dental health.
The discussion was further fueled by various community members, each articulating their opposition to the practice. Several residents referenced studies linking fluoride exposure to cognitive impairments in children, echoing concerns raised by health professionals, including Florida’s Surgeon General. They advocated for individual choice in medical treatments and highlighted that many counties in Florida have already ceased water fluoridation due to health risks.
A retired lieutenant colonel supported these views, emphasizing the infringement on citizens’ rights to refuse medical treatment. He stated that continuing the practice overlooks the risks, simply because it has been in place for decades. A nurse practitioner also criticized the quality and safety of the fluoride used in water treatment, pointing out that it is not pharmaceutical grade and lacks approval for tooth decay prevention.
The debate was underscored by a resident who presented a resolution from the Hillsboro Republican Executive Committee, calling for an immediate halt to water fluoridation. They noted that several counties in Florida and numerous countries worldwide have banned the practice, advocating for fluoride to be an optional rather than mandatory inclusion in municipal water systems.
Following the fluoridation debate, the council addressed a significant land use amendment. A public hearing was held for a conditional use application concerning the property on Bullard Parkway. The application, submitted by Florida College, sought to repurpose an existing structure for educational use, transitioning from its previous designation as a church. The council unanimously approved the application, recognizing the college’s long-standing presence in the area and the minimal impact anticipated on the neighborhood.
The meeting continued with a discussion on a comprehensive future land use map amendment for a 20-acre parcel on Rollerson Ranch Road. The proposed change from public/semi-public to residential 18 designation would allow for increased residential development. The Planning Commission’s review found the amendment consistent with Temple Terrace’s comprehensive plan. However, residents expressed concerns about the potential traffic increase and environmental impact, particularly in relation to existing congestion during school hours.
Residents voiced apprehensions about the implications of introducing an apartment complex, with particular emphasis on traffic congestion and noise from the nearby I-75 highway. The council was urged to consider the community’s concerns, and a representative for the development assured them of plans to address traffic issues.
Additionally, the council discussed stormwater management, addressing recent flooding issues and a task work order to improve drainage on Brentwood Drive. The project, presented by the city engineer, aimed to address stormwater flow challenges, with design completion expected by the end of the year and construction potentially starting in early 2026.
