A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to discussions about possible open space grant proposals. One proposal aimed at repairing tennis courts and ensuring they comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Another proposal outlined the creation of an amphitheater in the Rosel Commons area to enhance community space. A third proposal explored the conversion of a road near the train station into a pedestrian plaza adorned with benches and greenery. The council weighed the potential costs, feasibility, and safety considerations of these proposals. Additionally, two residents presented a case for installing sidewalks in their neighborhood to improve pedestrian safety, bringing attention to the need for community support and financial planning for such infrastructure projects.
A resident’s concern over solar power and tree removal also featured prominently in the discussion. The resident, Linda Trumi, inquired about making a hardship appeal to use solar power by cutting down trees on her property, citing a specific exception in the tree code. The town attorney advised her to adhere to the standard procedures for hardship appeals, which might require a new permit for tree removal to align with appeal timelines. The Environmental Commission had visited the resident’s property and was reportedly divided on the issue. The council discussed the environmental implications and the benefits of solar power but did not reach a final decision, instead advising the resident to review the appeal procedures.
In terms of infrastructure, the council engaged in a conversation about PSNG’s plan to excavate and repave five miles of roads. Coordination with the town’s road program was considered vital, and there was interest in revisiting a report on road conditions and maintenance. The council also highlighted the importance of a drainage project on Ridge Road for its inclusion in the 2024 Road program.
The repurposing of the old skate park at Roosevelt Commons was proposed, with plans to fit three pickleball courts, and the swim club renovation project was discussed, including grant submission and proposed enhancements to the pool area for improved accessibility.
In further discussions, the council acknowledged the benefits of installing solar panels but deemed a regulation change unnecessary at the time, as only one person had expressed interest. Councilwoman Corsair mentioned the possibility of improving downtown lighting using funds from the American Rescue Plan. The council agreed on the need for additional information and input from the police department before proceeding.
