Tequesta Country Club Renovation and Village Annex Design Dominate Planning Board Discussions
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Tequesta Planning and Zoning Board evaluated renovation proposals for the Tequesta Country Club and discussed design modifications for the village annex. The board approved the country club’s site plan modifications, including a new cafĂ© and maintenance facility, with certain conditions. A discussion also unfolded over the village annex’s color scheme and landscaping enhancements.
The proposed renovation of the Tequesta Country Club was a primary focus, with discussions about the site’s new cafĂ© and maintenance facility. The plan includes demolishing the existing cafĂ© to construct a new single-story structure of approximately 1,800 square feet. The new cafĂ©, designed with a coastal aesthetic, features a screened outdoor seating area and a covered porch adjacent to the golf course’s 10th green. Access to the cafĂ© will be restricted to foot traffic and golf carts, addressing concerns about vehicle congestion. The architectural design aims to align with the proposed clubhouse, incorporating stucco and aluminum accents along with decorative elements like louvers and brackets.
In addition to the cafĂ©, the relocation of the maintenance facility was discussed. The new site is centrally located and shielded from view with extensive landscaping. The facility will consist of standard metal structures painted green to blend with the environment. It will house multiple operational buildings, including cart storage, a chemical storage area, a fuel island, and recycling bins. A designated parking area for maintenance staff is also planned, though it will not be accessible to the public. The board expressed particular interest in the facility’s structural integrity against hurricanes, prompting assurances of compliance with relevant building codes.
Landscaping plans for the country club were also detailed, revealing that 81% of the proposed plant species are Florida natives. The landscaping strategy is designed to create visual buffers along Country Club Drive. Concerns about light pollution from parking areas were discussed, with board members emphasizing the need to maintain a traditional appearance to minimize impact on nearby homes.
The board also turned its attention to the village annex on Seabrook Road. This site plan modification included updated renderings and landscaping plans, incorporating community feedback from a previous meeting. The proposal suggested a new color palette for the building, with some board members favoring a blue hue to match the nearby Tequesta Recreation Center, while others supported the original gray color suggested by the architect.
Landscaping enhancements for the annex included maintaining existing live oaks and introducing sable palms and silver buttonwoods. The board debated the choice of colors and design elements, with discussions about integrating more residential-like features to help the building blend into the neighborhood. Concerns were raised about the garage doors’ appearance, with suggestions to incorporate architectural features that would make them less commercial.
The discussion about the annex also touched on the height of sable palms and their potential impact on the building’s roofline. The board agreed that any future issues could be resolved through affordable replacements. The annex’s facade aesthetics were also debated, with suggestions to add more greenery to shield white walls and create a more natural appearance.
Additional topics included the relocation of a “little free library” that was originally near the annex entrance. The library has been moved to Remembrance Park, confirmed by meeting participants. Parking on Shea Place was another point of interest, with board members advocating for resident consultation before implementing any public parking plans.
The meeting concluded with a vote on the color scheme for the annex’s facade and landscaping. The motion to approve the second color scheme passed by a narrow margin. The board also discussed the possibility of adjusting the date of their next meeting, ultimately deciding to keep it on December 18th, barring any pressing agenda items.
