- Meeting Overview:
The Tracy City Council meeting saw the approval of the sale of two city-owned lots on 2nd Street, a decision aimed at fostering residential development. The council also focused on enhancing traffic safety by introducing radar signs to mitigate speeding concerns as vehicles enter the city.
The council unanimously approved the sale of two lots located at 349 and 361 2nd Street, which had been on the market since the demolition of old homes a decade ago. Originally listed at $15,000 each, the lots were eventually sold for $7,500 each after negotiations. The buyers plan to commence development in the spring, with discussions on whether to build on both lots immediately or start with one. This sale aligns with the council’s broader strategy to encourage residential growth and improve the city’s infrastructure while managing budget constraints effectively.
In a bid to enhance traffic safety, the council deliberated on the purchase of three solar-powered radar signs. These signs are intended to increase awareness of speed limits on key entry points into the city, specifically along Highway 14 and County Road 14. Concerns about speeding vehicles, particularly near residential areas and public spaces, were voiced by local residents. The cost of the radar signs is estimated at $9,350, with funding proposed to be reallocated from various budget lines. The council considered upgrading the signs for an additional $1,000 each to include data collection capabilities, although some members preferred to first assess the signs’ initial effectiveness. The Chief highlighted the urgency, warning of potential tragedies if speeding was not addressed.
Discussions continued with updates on library policies and grant applications, particularly in response to new legislative requirements surrounding book bans and material selection in libraries. The librarian reported attending the Minnesota Library Association conference and emphasized the need to review the library’s collection development policy. Efforts were also underway to secure a $110,000 grant from the Minnesota Historical Society for engineering costs related to roof repairs, part of a larger $400,000 project.
The council also reviewed several development and infrastructure projects, including the Front Street Acres development and the zoning of the old Monford pork buying station property. Drainage issues and discrepancies in property lines were noted, with potential solutions being explored to facilitate residential subdivision plans. Concerns about the delay in Center Street repairs were raised, with hopes that communication with the railroad safety board might expedite progress.
Attention shifted to community amenities, with the council addressing repairs at the community pool due to rust and deterioration, and the need for lead service line assessments in older properties. Updates to the city’s website were also discussed, focusing on ADA compliance and the transition to a .gov domain.
Key resolutions included amendments to the third-quarter budget to accommodate significant donations and planned capital expenditures, such as purchasing new playground equipment for Central Park. Additionally, the council prepared for the upcoming general election by scheduling a canvassing session and discussed a resolution to manage a property dispute efficiently.
