Traffic Safety Concerns and Road Improvement Plans Dominate Piscataway Township Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Piscataway Township Council meeting, discussions centered on traffic safety concerns at a problematic intersection, the adoption of a significant bond ordinance for road improvements, and various community announcements. Residents voiced apprehensions about traffic safety, while the council approved several ordinances without public comment.
The meeting drew particular attention to the intersection of Wickley Avenue and Zer Avenue, where resident Noel Mazar raised safety concerns. Mazar highlighted the visibility issues caused by parked cars at the stop sign, which are exacerbated by speeding vehicles from Zer Avenue. He noted a recent accident and frequent near misses, urging the council to consider implementing parking restrictions to enhance safety. Mazar emphasized that current measures, such as rumble strips and speed limit signs, were ineffective in slowing down the traffic.
The council members discussed the feasibility of establishing no-parking zones near the intersection to improve visibility. However, the possibility of resident discontent was acknowledged, especially from those who depend on street parking. The idea of restricting parking only a certain distance from the intersection was proposed, but the council decided to consult with the engineering department to explore viable solutions. Another resident, Sheila Mazar, suggested the addition of a stop sign at Zer Avenue might help mitigate the safety issues.
In addition to traffic concerns, the council adopted a bond ordinance for road improvements amounting to $6,724,747, with $5,990,000 financed through bonds. These improvements target several streets, including Patton Avenue and Old New Brunswick Road, addressing the need for infrastructure enhancement. The ordinance was introduced in November and passed unanimously after a second reading, with no public opposition.
The council also approved a redevelopment plan for a property on Stelton Road and another for blocks 6201 and 7401, known as the Ericson site. Both plans had undergone prior introductions and were similarly met with unanimous support from the council. Additionally, an amendment to the salary and wage ordinance was adopted, indicating the council’s unified approach to municipal governance, as evidenced by the lack of debate or public comments.
Community engagement was highlighted through a series of announcements from council members. Residents were invited to partake in upcoming holiday events, such as Santa’s visit to Town Hall and the opportunity for children to call Santa. The Piscataway home decorating contest and a winter coat drive organized by the police department were also promoted, emphasizing the community’s spirit of giving, especially during the holiday season.
The mayor reported the completion of paving on two streets, with further construction scheduled for the spring. He reminded residents about the December 31st deadline for leaf bag collections. Additionally, ongoing construction projects, particularly on Centennial, were discussed, with assurances that work would progress as weather conditions permit.
The council’s decisions on various ordinances and plans demonstrated a cohesive stance on municipal development and infrastructure improvements.
