- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Treasure Island City Commission, a community-supported proposal to ban personal fireworks on the beach was a focal point of discussion. The proposal, which aims to address safety, security, and environmental concerns, garnered attention with over 100 signatures from community members in support and compelling public comments highlighting the impact on wildlife and the litter problem following holiday celebrations. The commission is considering the ordinance and its alignment with state regulations, emphasizing the importance of public education and outreach to ensure voluntary compliance.
The debate over the proposed fireworks ban was not the only matter of substantial public interest during the meeting. The commission also discussed a range of other topics, from healthcare services to infrastructure projects. One of the presentations was from Brent Burish, CEO of HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital, who outlined the hospital’s mission, community involvement, and awards for quality care. RJ Meers from Shoemaker Advisors provided an update on the state legislative update, touching on the budget and its implications for local projects, including Treasure Island’s roadway and drainage improvements.
The meeting also addressed the impact of federal and state legislation on local affairs, with a focus on the vacation rental bill expected to be signed into law and its potential effects on the community. The fiscal year 2025 federal spending bills were discussed, with particular attention given to a wastewater collection system lining project that could be included in the bills. Additionally, the importance of the Water Resources Development Act and the upcoming election’s possible influence on the passage of spending bills were highlighted.
In terms of community involvement, public comments covered a variety of concerns and initiatives. A citizen stressed the importance of maintaining citizen control in city matters, citing St. Pete Beach as an example. The efforts of the Life Intervention Focus Team (LIFT) were brought up, underscoring their work in advocacy, education, and fundraising to support at-risk residents. Beautification issues in the city, particularly concerning utility boxes and bollards, were also raised, with a resident offering to share potential solutions with the commission.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 158 made a notable contribution to the community, donating funds to the Parks and Recreation Department’s scholarship fund and to the Treasure Island Police and Fire Associations. These donations aim to assist families with registration fees for summer and winter camps and to support the respective associations.
Infrastructure was another point of discussion. The commission approved the purchase of playground equipment and shade structures for Sunset Beach Pavilion and a swing set shade structure for the Isle of Palms, prioritizing the need to provide safe and updated facilities for children.
The City Manager provided updates on infrastructure projects, including potential beach renourishment, the repair of a 50-year-old groin behind Sunset Pavilion, and the Living Shoreline project. The City Attorney commented on the progress with State lands and the boundary survey for the Living Shoreline project. The commission also considered authorizing a contract with Alpha Fireworks for the 2024 4th of July celebration.
In addition to the fireworks ban proposal, other safety concerns were discussed, such as a letter of support for a crosswalk between Taco Bus and Sea Dog Brew Pub to improve pedestrian safety. The idea of an underpass had been previously considered but was not pursued.
Lastly, the commission addressed a resident’s concerns about the increasing tax burden on homeowners and the perceived lack of contribution from businesses to the local economy. The resident mentioned the possibility of forming a committee to propose changes to the city’s governance through a new charter.
