- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Trenton City Council meeting, attention was given to foreclosure issues faced by local property owners, the renaming of an athletic complex, and ongoing community initiatives. Key discussions included public testimonies about unexpected property foreclosures, a resolution to rename the Athletic Complex after Sharon Grady, and various community-focused projects.
One notable issue at the meeting was the testimony of Charmaine and Carl Osborne, local property owners on Styers Avenue. Charmaine Osborne recounted the troubling experience they faced with the city concerning their recently acquired properties. Despite being assured that their tax liability was zero, they received letters demanding assessments for unpaid taxes. Alarmingly, they discovered that both properties were in foreclosure without prior notification. Charmaine highlighted their commitment to improving the properties and contributing positively to the city, asking how such a situation could occur without due notice.
Carl Osborne continued, sharing personal anecdotes about the properties, including multiple break-ins and city-imposed fines. He expressed frustration over the city’s sudden attention to their properties only after they began renovations. “I have seen many people…no one wanted it when the drug dealers took over the neighborhood,” Carl stated, pointing to a perceived inconsistency in the city’s engagement. He emphasized their struggle to improve the neighborhood and firmly stated, “You’re not going to get it without a fight,” underscoring their dedication to remaining in Trenton and contributing to the community.
The Osbornes’ testimony was met with acknowledgment from one council member, who expressed hope for a positive resolution and ongoing communication with them.
Another major topic was the announcement of the renaming of the Athletic Complex after Sharon Grady, the first African American woman to serve as an athletic director in Trenton and a seven-time state championship winner. The renaming ceremony is scheduled for October 12th at Trenton Central High School.
Public comments also brought attention to the Trenton Police Department. Greg Zeff, representing Jawan Henderson and the NAACP, voiced concerns about ongoing issues within the department, referencing major complaints and a federal investigation. Zeff offered the NAACP’s assistance to help improve the police department, emphasizing the need for collaboration to prevent future incidents. Austin Awards Salam, a colleague of Zeff, echoed support for the Henderson case and the NAACP’s willingness to assist in resolving ongoing issues.
Council members also focused on various community initiatives. Councilwoman Williams highlighted a forthcoming meeting of the Northwood CCE advisory council aimed at fostering better community-police relations. She noted that anti-theft devices would be distributed at the meeting and shared her pride in local sports teams, particularly the Trenton High football team.
Councilwoman Gonzalez expressed gratitude to the Osbornes for their engagement and acknowledged the Recreation Department’s efforts in enhancing parks, particularly those catering to differently-abled populations. She also mentioned community events like the GTO Independencia event and a Taste of Trenton initiative supporting local businesses.
A council member also discussed the revitalization of Villa Park, praised for its inclusive design accommodating individuals with disabilities. They proposed converting part of a locked tennis court into a basketball court, arguing that basketball would better serve the community.
National Voter Registration Day was recognized, with appreciation expressed for an assembly held at Central High School. A council member highlighted the importance of student engagement in the voting process, acknowledging efforts to register students to vote.
The council also discussed the demolition of 17 homes on Fountain Avenue as part of the Choice program, expressing enthusiasm for the potential improvements this could bring to the city. A council member addressed critics of ongoing projects, emphasizing the progress being made despite past challenges.
Further discussions included an invitation for community engagement on September 24th at the COO on South Broad Street, where residents could discuss various issues with city officials. The council vice president encouraged attendance, emphasizing the importance of community voices.
