Trenton City Council Plans Revamp of Hazardous Crosswalks
- Meeting Overview:
Trenton City Council recently convened to deliberate on several issues affecting local residents, with the overhaul of dangerous crosswalks and transportation safety measures at the forefront.
Top priority was given to the discussion on transportation safety, particularly the problematic crosswalks at the intersections of Butler and Cass Streets and 129, which have been flagged for revamping to enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety. The New Jersey Department of Transportation provided a plan to commence the revamp in 2029. Furthermore, talks were held about installing speed humps on Stokeley Avenue, specifically in front of South Village and a local school, to curb speeding concerns.
Another issue raised was the restoration of gas pipes and the rehabilitation of Ler Street, which was presented by county officials. The city’s infrastructure concerns extended to the drainage problem on Woodside Avenue, where residents are grappling with water seepage onto their properties. Despite city officials’ attempts to resolve the situation, the challenge persists as the problem originates from a canal-like area on private land, created by an old railroad track.
The Trenton Restorative Street Team made an impactful presentation, emphasizing their mission to promote peace and reduce city violence through seven programs. Their “Week of Shalom” initiative particularly resonated with the council, with members expressing support and willingness to assist with logistics and material support.
Public comments highlighted a spectrum of concerns from residents, ranging from the impact of the drug war on specific communities to street cleaning, garbage collection, and flooding issues due to inadequate drainage. The council acknowledged these concerns, with responses indicating a commitment to address the drainage issues among others.
Council members discussed local happenings and initiatives, including the city’s recycling problems and strategies for educational outreach regarding this and other topics such as cannabis legalization and mental health support. Upcoming community events such as a neighborhood association cookout, a memorial service at Locust Hill Cemetery Interpretive Center, and Mental Health Awareness Month activities were also announced.
Other notable mentions included Foundation Academy’s proposal to purchase the doll factory on Grand Street for school expansion, which was met with positive feedback from the residents.
The meeting concluded with the council addressing various agenda items, including the approval of a bond ordinance for roadway repairs and a revision of the cannabis consumption ordinance to accommodate medicinal cannabis patients.
