Trenton City Council Recognizes Local Cobbler, Discusses Traffic Safety and Development Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The Trenton City Council meeting on April 7, 2026, addressed community issues, including the recognition of a longstanding local cobbler, efforts to improve traffic safety under the Safe Streets for All initiative, and ongoing challenges with urban development projects. The meeting also saw discussions on the city’s budget, public safety, and property sales.
The council dedicated a portion of the meeting to honor Robert Giaquinto, a celebrated cobbler in the community, for his decades of service. Council members highlighted Giaquinto’s contributions, including a shoe drive for the homeless, which provided over 3,000 shoes. Giaquinto’s family was present, and his wife conveyed his pride in serving the city, as well as the adjustments made to his work schedule for health reasons. This recognition was characterized by gratitude from the council.
The committee’s annual report focused on reducing fatalities and serious injuries on Trenton’s high injury network, which accounts for 75% of such incidents on just 16% of the streets. Notably, the vulnerability of pedestrians and cyclists was underscored, as they were involved in over 45% of fatal or serious crashes in 2024, compared to the state average of 28%. The committee’s work aligns with Vision Zero initiatives seen in nearby cities, aiming for zero traffic deaths through collaboration with county and state entities, and has already secured nearly $1 million in grants for infrastructure improvements.
Council discussions also touched upon urban development, with Vista Center Development outlining their long-term project near the Trenton train station. The project, initially proposed as an office building in 2008, faced delays due to litigation but is now set to commence as a residential building. Concerns were raised about the impact on surrounding infrastructure, including two historical mansions slated for demolition, and the developer emphasized using local suppliers and contractors to support the Trenton economy.
The council addressed other matters, including the city’s proposed budget of $298.4 million. The budget discussion highlighted a mandated 2% tax rate increase and the need for a waiver from the local finance board due to exceeding the appropriations cap. The budget anticipates $59 million in transition aid and $10 million in capital city aid, despite challenges like the decrease in taxable property value.
Public comments during the meeting revealed community concerns about redevelopment accountability, with calls for the council to scrutinize past agreements with developers to ensure public benefits. Residents also voiced frustrations over sanitation operations and property demolitions, urging transparency and accountability from city officials. The council acknowledged these concerns.
