Tuckerton Borough Council Approves Filming Ordinance and Eyes Dredging Project
- Meeting Overview:
The Tuckerton Borough Council recently convened to address significant legislative matters, including the adoption of an ordinance to facilitate film projects in the borough and discussions about a potential ecological restoration project for Thompson’s Creek. Both initiatives aim to boost local economic activity and environmental sustainability.
The council’s decision to adopt Ordinance Number 9 of 2025, titled “Filming of Motion Pictures,” marks a strategic move to capitalize on state legislation encouraging film production in New Jersey. This ordinance is designed to attract production companies to Tuckerton, potentially generating revenue and increasing visitor traffic. During the public comment period, a supporter highlighted the immediate interest from a production company eager to film in the area. The council unanimously voted to adopt the ordinance.
In line with Tuckerton’s environmental priorities, the council also adopted Ordinance Number 10 of 2025, which revises the borough’s tree management policies. This ordinance introduces a comprehensive permitting process for tree removal, mandating the replanting of trees of similar size to prevent clear-cutting and promote biodiversity.
Beyond legislative actions, the council explored a grant opportunity that could impact local ecological efforts. A potential dredging project for Thompson’s Creek was discussed, with plans to apply for funding through a $28 million grant pool. This project aims to use dredged material for ecological restoration, incorporating thin layer deposition and planting initiatives similar to those in Stafford Township. The council expressed optimism about securing the grant, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder collaboration to enhance the project’s viability.
In addition to these major topics, the council addressed various public works resolutions, including the approval of contracts for essential infrastructure improvements. Notably, a road opening on Heron Road was authorized for reconnecting gas service, and contracts were awarded for public works vehicles and equipment.
Attention was also given to public safety, with the police department set to participate in a Defense Logistics Agency program to acquire equipment at no cost. The department’s monthly activity report demonstrated active engagement in community safety, with 241 calls for service and 12 arrests.
The meeting’s conclusion was marked by a focus on community events and gatherings. Recent festivities, such as the tree lighting ceremony, attracted significant attendance and highlighted the collaborative efforts of local organizations. The Parkertown Fire Department’s involvement and the police department’s effective management of pedestrian safety were commended.
Looking ahead, the council discussed plans for future tree planting initiatives, aligning with the environmental committee’s goals. A textile recycling drive and an invasive species presentation were also outlined, emphasizing ongoing community engagement in environmental stewardship.
