Union High School Exits School Improvement Status, Celebrates New Initiatives and Leadership
- Meeting Overview:
The Union County School Board meeting recently highlighted Union High School’s significant achievement of exiting the School Improvement Award (SIA) status by June 2025, alongside discussions on enhancing educational programs, leadership changes, and community engagement initiatives.
The removal of the SIA status for Union High School was framed as a positive development, with board members acknowledging past achievements in other district schools, such as Jefferson and Franklin. It was noted that only one school remains under SIA status, with expectations for its removal in the following year. The board invited community inquiries regarding the SIA status, emphasizing transparency and engagement in the process.
Notable improvements were recorded in reading and math, particularly within the K-2 grades, where more than 20% of students now read at or above grade level. The Middle School showed similar advancements, with a 15% decrease in students scoring below grade level among English Language Learners (ELLs). The board credited these gains to the collaborative efforts of instructional coaches and administrators.
The meeting also highlighted the success of the “Beyond the Bell” program, an after-school initiative supporting students in language arts and math. The program, initially serving 86 sixth graders, has expanded to include over 200 sixth and seventh graders. This growth was attributed to small group instruction and continuous monitoring of student progress. The involvement of parents was stressed as important to ensuring student success and engagement. Additionally, the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) initiative and the “Play Unified” sports program, which integrates students with and without disabilities, were noted for their contributions to fostering a positive school environment.
Leadership changes were another focal point of the meeting, with the introduction of Baris Grant as the new physical education teacher and head football coach at Union High School. Grant, a local community member, expressed his enthusiasm for the role. The board members shared this excitement, recognizing the importance of extracurricular activities in student engagement and community pride.
The board also discussed personnel changes due to school reconfiguration, aiming to establish key committees focusing on education, fiscal operations, and personnel to address these transitions effectively. The retirement of Dilia Mlan Bernett, a vice principal, was announced, and the board acknowledged the challenges in hiring tradespeople, urging community support in finding candidates.
The fiscal and planning committee presented resolutions, including routine financial reports and the approval of the Learning Ally reading program, funded by the New Jersey Department of Education grant. This program aims to enhance reading skills across all elementary schools, aligning with the district’s academic goals.
Public comments during the meeting included concerns about financial transparency, particularly regarding the organization of the check register and legal bills. The board acknowledged these concerns, emphasizing the need for clarity in financial practices. Additionally, the successful grant application for the Township of Union Education Foundation was discussed, highlighting its role in supporting educational initiatives within the district.
