Union Town Council Approves Emergency Appropriation and Police Reports Highlight Community Safety Efforts
- Meeting Overview:
The Union Town Council meeting focused on several issues, including the approval of a special emergency appropriation for severance payments, significant police department activities, and public work updates. The council’s decisions reflect ongoing efforts to address budgetary needs, enhance public safety, and maintain community infrastructure.
At the forefront of the meeting was the approval of a special emergency appropriation, which allows the township to manage contractually required severance payments over a five-year period. This financial strategy, which passed unanimously, aims to balance immediate fiscal responsibilities with long-term budget sustainability.
Public safety was a major focus, with detailed reports from the police department highlighting efforts to improve community security. Between December and mid-January, the police conducted 1,614 directed patrols, resulting in 21 service calls and 60 arrests. Notably, they recovered a stolen vehicle and solved a bank robbery through diligent investigation. Additionally, enforcement initiatives led to 145 stops and 146 tickets, addressing truck, red light, and speed violations. The department expressed an intention to reduce the proportion of tickets issued to residents, which currently stands just under 20%.
The fire department reported on numerous incidents, including a fully involved garage fire and apartment fires, emphasizing the need for ongoing community vigilance. Their efforts in responding to 80 emergency calls within two weeks, primarily for medical services, demonstrate their critical role in community safety. The fire commissioner provided safety tips, particularly concerning Christmas tree disposal and fireplace maintenance.
Public works updates were also a part of the meeting. The sewer division’s maintenance activities included 120 catch basin cleanings and managing fats, oils, and grease through 20 enzyme applications. The shade tree division addressed tree management, conducting removals, trims, and stump removals, while the public was encouraged to report concerns to the DPW.
The council approved several resolutions related to procurement and budget management, such as the 2025 temporary budget and contracts for various township services. Noteworthy among these was a grant application to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs for renovating the basketball court at Weber Park, showing a commitment to enhancing recreational facilities.
The meeting also covered community enrichment and engagement initiatives. Appointments to the Disabilities and Mental Health Committee and the Recreation Advisement Committee were unanimously approved, fostering inclusive governance. The Recreation Department announced online registration for winter programs, including unique offerings like fashion design and Lego robotics, alongside a new Esports program.
The mayor highlighted upcoming events, including the Martin Luther King Day of Service and various workshops to celebrate Valentine’s Day and Black History Month. These events are designed to foster community spirit and cultural appreciation, offering residents opportunities for engagement and learning.
During the public comment session, resident Darren Mar raised concerns about street repairs and the delays caused by utility companies, which affect residents dealing with tire damage. He also highlighted safety issues with motorized scooters and e-bikes. Mar addressed the lack of diversity on local construction sites, advocating for better outreach to employ qualified Black workers. Additionally, he questioned the absence of lights at Bear Temple Park’s basketball court and sought clarification on the rescinded cannabis business license.
