Union Town Council Bans Smoking on Public Property Amidst Resident Pushback
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Union Town Council meeting, an ordinance prohibiting smoking on all public property within the township was passed despite opposition from residents. The council also addressed numerous community concerns, ranging from accessible parking at the new library to local infrastructure improvements.
The ordinance banning smoking on public property drew discussion, with resident Gary Moser voicing strong opposition. Moser criticized the ordinance for failing to differentiate between various forms of smoking, such as vaping, cigarette smoking, and marijuana use. He argued that this lack of distinction was “blatantly unfair” and contended that the ordinance, by pushing smokers to smoke in their cars, might inadvertently lead to more toxic exposure. Moser characterized the measure as governmental overreach. Despite these concerns, the council adopted the ordinance unanimously.
Another notable discussion involved a resolution urging the county to conduct a traffic study at the Five Points intersection. The council expressed the need for improvements at this critical juncture, and the resolution was passed with unanimous support.
The meeting also highlighted a resolution for purchasing new chairs for the library theater, with a financial cap set at $21,350. The council approved a professional service agreement with CME Associates for engineering and LSRP services at Rapkin Park, agreeing on a total cost of $379,742. Additionally, resolutions to increase contract amounts for technological infrastructure services for the new library, as well as legal services for an ABC matter, were approved without dissent.
Fire safety was another key issue discussed. Fire Commissioner Patricia G. Frasier reported on the Union Fire Department’s response to 631 calls, highlighting the aftermath of a severe thunderstorm on July 26, which resulted in 81 calls for service. Frasier emphasized the importance of fire safety, urging residents to inspect heating equipment and maintain fire extinguishers.
Concerns about accessible parking at the new library were raised by resident Tasha Neely. Neely expressed frustration over the conversion of accessible parking spots to “employee only” parking, which posed significant challenges for her as she uses a cane. She urged the council to restore these spots. The council acknowledged her concerns, confirming that the employee-only parking signs had been removed to reinstate accessible parking.
Infrastructure discussions also included a resolution for increased solid waste collection rates and payments, which the council supported unanimously. In addition, the council approved a refund request from a resident for an overpayment on a liquor license and granted permission for a block party on Airheart Street in 2025.
Public Works Commissioner Manuel Figueiredo presented an extensive report detailing the department’s recent activities, including street sweeping, road repairs, and park maintenance. The report underscored the department’s ongoing efforts to maintain the township’s infrastructure and respond to residents’ concerns.
The meeting concluded with public comments, where resident Eileen Nahucheski expressed gratitude for the council’s prompt action in addressing property concerns on Willow Drive. Another resident, Cheryl from Hickory Manor, raised an issue about missing crosswalks on Hendris Drive, prompting the mayor to commit to investigating the matter further.
