Union Town Council Welcomes New Leadership and Celebrates Community Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Union Town Council meeting marked a significant day as James Bowser Jr. and Patricia Guerra-Frazier were officially sworn in, with Guerra-Frazier becoming the first Latina mayor of Union. The meeting, attended by Governor-elect Mikey Cheryl, also highlighted substantial progress in community projects, public safety initiatives, and upcoming enhancements to parks and recreational facilities.
Governor-elect Mikey Cheryl opened the meeting by commending public servants for their dedication and emphasizing New Jersey’s leadership role in national values and opportunities. Cheryl’s participation in the swearing-in ceremony for James Bowser Jr. and Patricia Guerra-Frazier was met with applause, signaling community support for the new leadership. Cheryl’s address underscored the township’s role in the forthcoming 250th anniversary of American independence and her gratitude for being part of this local leadership celebration.
The meeting celebrated the previous year’s accomplishments, notably the opening of the new public library and art center, which has quickly become a community hub. In its first seven months, the facility issued 4,000 new library cards, recorded nearly 70,000 visitors, and hosted diverse events, including a pottery expo and art gallery exhibits.
Further discussions highlighted the importance of parks and recreational spaces, with plans to enhance accessibility and family friendliness through various upgrades. The council outlined forthcoming investments aimed at repairing playgrounds, improving lighting and pathways, and expanding accessibility features. Specific upgrades at Weber Park and Rapkin Park, including new courts and versatile event spaces, are expected to bolster community involvement and recreational opportunities.
Public safety remained a focal point, with the introduction of Raul Malave as the new fire director and a commitment to supporting police and fire services through essential training and equipment. The police department addressed over 12,000 moving and parking violations in the past year, while the fire department responded to more than 5,100 emergency incidents.
Economic development successes were also celebrated, with over 35 new businesses opening and numerous anniversaries marked. The council emphasized the importance of supporting local entrepreneurs through workshops and initiatives designed to spur economic growth. The revitalization of Union Center was discussed, with plans to develop infrastructure that respects the township’s character while concentrating growth along the Styverson Avenue corridor.
The meeting concluded with various administrative appointments and resolutions for the upcoming year. These included the appointment of committee members to the cultural arts board, disabilities and mental health committee, and economic advisory committee, among others. The council also approved a range of professional service contracts for 2026.
