Sandra Terrell’s appointment was an event, as it brought a new member into the Union Township Committee. Terrell, who has a substantial career history with Horizon Express Scripts and Medco, was immediately effective in her role and is also involved with the Union Township Community Action organization. Her extensive experience in business is expected to add valuable insight to the Township Committee’s operations.

Following the announcement of Terrell’s appointment, the council approved minutes from the previous session and delved into a series of ordinances, resolutions, and approvals that reflect the town’s operational and strategic planning. These included logistical matters such as the management of handicap parking spaces, solid waste collection, and disposal contracts. The council also addressed the purchase of safety footwear, the removal of brush and logs, and the acquisition of road salt, all crucial for maintaining the town’s infrastructure and the Department of Public Works’ efficiency.

Further administrative tasks included the transfer of a plenary retail consumption license, the filing of tax appeals and counterclaims, and the approval of refunds. Community events also garnered the council’s support.

The Union Recreation Department’s announcement of online registration for the 2024 summer camp was an important highlight for community engagement. The program, designed for children entering 3rd to 6th grade, comprises two 3-week sessions that will run from June 24th to August 2nd. At a cost of $425 per session, the camp offers accessible summer activities for Union’s youth.

The Union Municipal Band is also contributing to the town’s cultural and community support initiatives with two benefit concerts planned. The first is set for April 15th at Hannah Caldwell, with proceeds aiding the Union PBA scholarship fund. The second concert, honoring the Veterans Alliance and the Memorial Day Parade, will take place on May 13th at the Union Senior Center.

Health and wellness within the community were addressed as well, with services including nurse prevention, blood pressure, and blood sugar checks. The council also discussed the Memoir Workshop, an initiative contributing to the wellbeing of Union’s residents.

The Fire Department’s report was notable for its account of 215 emergency calls, including responses to structure fires and motor vehicle accidents.

The Police Department emphasized the importance of traffic law adherence, stressing the need for stopping at red lights and maintaining speed limits, which is important for public safety.

Public comments addressed at the meeting reflected resident concerns over increasing development and retail store scarcity. Further issues raised by citizens included parking challenges, sidewalk obstruction, and the problem of overnight car thefts.
