Union Township Approves Affordable Housing Initiatives Amidst Winter Storm Recovery Efforts
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Union Township Committee meeting, officials approved several ordinances related to affordable housing and commended the Department of Public Works (DPW) for their handling of a recent significant snowstorm. The meeting also covered police department updates, community events, and public comments addressing pedestrian safety and local art funding.
The committee advanced its affordable housing agenda by adopting a new ordinance authorizing the purchase of properties on Mars Avenue. The properties, identified as block 2320, lots 4 and 7, are earmarked for development as part of the township’s ongoing efforts to meet affordable housing requirements. A draft ordinance was also introduced to repeal and replace Chapter 190, aligning local policies with the Fair Housing Act and the Uniform Housing Affordability Controls. This draft was approved for a first reading.
In conjunction with these developments, the committee discussed amendments to Chapter 170 of the land development regulations. These amendments introduce two new affordable housing zones, AH4 and AH5, which have been sent to the planning board for further evaluation. Additionally, an ordinance was proposed to create a Styson Avenue overlay district, permitting mixed uses and multifamily housing, which was similarly referred to the planning board.
The township’s response to recent weather challenges was another focal point of the meeting. Officials expressed gratitude towards the DPW for their extensive efforts during a snowstorm described as one of the largest in a decade. Up to 20 inches of snow were recorded, necessitating a coordinated response involving road grinding and collaboration with contractors and emergency services. The DPW filled 175 potholes and melted snow from earlier storms. Residents were encouraged to report any concerns directly to the DPW.
Police activity during the storm period was also highlighted, with a reported 2,900 calls for service. The department made 74 arrests and issued numerous traffic violation tickets, including citations for trucks in restricted areas and red-light violations. Police efforts included the successful apprehension of suspects involved in vehicle burglaries and theft.
Community engagement was also on the agenda, with updates on upcoming events. The Mayor acknowledged the performances of “The Color Purple” at the Union Arts Center and announced a Lego Building Workshop for April 11, where families can create models of iconic Union landmarks. The St. Patrick’s Day parade, scheduled for March 14, promises various festivities. Additionally, a networking event on April 16 aims to support a local second grader battling a brain tumor, encouraging community donations.
Public comments revealed concerns about pedestrian safety, with suggestions for a task force to address unsafe crossing behaviors. A resident proposed public awareness campaigns to mitigate risks. Another topic of discussion was funding for library artwork, with calls for prioritizing local artists over external agencies to save costs. The Mayor clarified that a significant art piece for the library was intended as a centerpiece, while ongoing efforts to include local artists in other projects were affirmed.
The meeting concluded with discussions on recent property purchases, including a property on Janette Avenue associated with the Knights of Columbus. A legislative grant funded the acquisition, incurring no cost to taxpayers. The Mars Avenue properties were also mentioned as part of future development plans aimed at enhancing community opportunities and maintaining Union Center’s integrity.
