Union Township Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day Parade Honorees Amidst Resident Concerns Over Infrastructure
- Meeting Overview:
The Union Township Town Council meeting was marked by the celebration of honorees for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day Parade, alongside residents voicing concerns about local infrastructure issues. Parade honorees received proclamations acknowledging their contributions, while community members highlighted neglected roads and safety hazards, prompting council responses and promises for future improvements.
The meeting began with a focus on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a cherished community event. Mayor James Bowser Jr. presented the Mayor’s Award to Mark Doling, the Grand Marshal of the 2025 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Doling’s proclamation recognized his dedication to his Irish heritage and community service, including his efforts in maintaining Ding’s Irish Pub in Rosel Park despite challenges like Hurricane Ida. Doling expressed gratitude to the township and parade committee, encouraging attendance at the parade scheduled for March 15 at 1:00 PM.
Gabby Sullivan, recognized as the General Chairperson, received a testimonial resolution highlighting her lifelong involvement with the parade. Sullivan emphasized the importance of collaboration between township departments, such as the police and fire services, to ensure the parade’s success. This year’s parade is dedicated to youth athletics, reflecting Sullivan’s belief in the transformative role of sports in the community.
James Holmes was acknowledged as the Adjutant of the parade, with his contributions to the community and his work as a firefighter being praised. Holmes stressed the collaborative effort needed to organize the event, introducing division leads who play critical roles in the parade’s success.
In addition to celebrating parade honorees, the council addressed numerous infrastructure concerns raised by residents during the public comment period. Ian Rry from Franklin Street voiced frustration over increased taxes despite a lack of neighborhood improvements. Rry cited a dangerous intersection without a stop sign and a damaged sidewalk due to tree roots that have been neglected for two decades. He noted the disparity in maintenance between his neighborhood and nearby areas, which have seen recent repaving and curbing. Rry also highlighted the unmaintained riverbank near his home, contrasting it with work done on the adjacent Milburn side, and inquired about the town’s engineering plans, particularly regarding pumping stations.
Katherine Lowski of Balmoral Avenue raised traffic safety concerns at the intersection of Winslow Avenue and Boxwell Road, advocating for a traffic light installation. Acknowledging previous discussions with the county, a council member confirmed plans for a traffic light installation, albeit acknowledging the lengthy process involved. Lowski also mentioned potholes, with the council suggesting she provide her contact information for follow-up.
Ashley Pavone from Patton Road highlighted the dangers of crossing Box Hall Road to access Sitel Park with her child. Despite contacting the police department and being informed that speed bumps were not feasible, Pavone remained skeptical about the effectiveness of proposed warning signs for the crosswalk. She emphasized the need for more substantial pedestrian safety measures.
The council also discussed fiscal matters, approving waste collection and disposal rates alongside supporting legislation for publishing legal notices on official government websites. The financial reports were unanimously approved.
During departmental reports, the Police Commissioner detailed police activities, including significant arrests and ongoing investigations. A notable incident involved a burglary where suspects were linked to a larger criminal organization targeting businesses. The Public Works Director provided updates on winter operations, including salt usage and pump station inspections, while the Fire Department reported on emergency response activities, underscoring public safety tips.
The Recreation Department announced upcoming educational classes and community events, including a car care class, summer camp registration, and an Easter egg hunt. Acknowledgments of local achievements and new resources at the Union Public Library were also highlighted, promoting community engagement and enrichment.
