- Meeting Overview:
The Verona School Board convened to deliberate on a variety of issues, among which the potential adoption of electric vehicles for the school’s fleet, the implementation of high-impact tutoring programs, the success of VHS students in national competitions, and discussions on the security of student data stood out. The meeting also addressed facility improvements, including the replacement of artificial turf at Verona High School and safety railings at Forest Avenue, along with the need for HVAC upgrades through grants.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the facilities committee’s proposals, which included repairs for lower field bleachers, the Press Box project, and the replacement of the high school’s artificial turf. The urgency of these upgrades was highlighted by the discussions on ensuring student and parent safety through the replacement of existing railings at Forest Avenue. These infrastructure improvements are seen as vital for maintaining a safe and functional environment for students and staff.
Another topic was the debate over the effectiveness and impact of the Hipster data collection instrument on the Hib (Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying) process. The board president raised concerns about the utility of the program, which led to a discussion among members. While some members questioned the benefits of the program and considered alternative solutions within the district’s internal systems, others defended its value in providing reminders and maintaining historical data. The emphasis was on finding a balance between making necessary changes and preserving established practices that serve the district’s needs.
The superintendent’s report touched on the retirement of three long-serving teachers, staffing updates, and the high-impact tutoring program. These topics, while not as contentious as the Hipster debate, are important for the continuity and quality of education within the district.
The finance committee’s report included financial resolutions such as the renewal of contracts with the food service manager vendor Pomptonian and health benefit providers. Additionally, adjustments to salaries pending the completion of negotiations were approved with little discussion.
The education committee report, delivered by Dr. Miller, provided insights into the academic support program, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and upcoming assessments. Professional development for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging goals, along with the implementation of the letters training program for literacy, were also discussed.
The Athletics committee report shed light on the accomplishments of the girls’ lacross team and the state sectionals for the girls and boys track teams. The need for bus drivers for the next school year was a logistical challenge that was brought to the board’s attention.
During the public comments section, community members voiced their concerns regarding the district’s response to an alleged incident at FM Brown. This highlighted the community’s expectation for transparency and effective action from the school district in handling sensitive issues.
Lastly, the student representative’s report underscored the academic and extracurricular achievements of VHS students, with the DECA club’s national competition success, art exhibition features, and a scholar-athlete award being notable highlights.
