Verona School Board Explores Growth of Service Learning in Capstone Projects
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Verona School Board meeting, attention was given to the successful implementation of service learning within the district’s Capstone projects. The board heard directly from students who participated in a transformative volunteer trip to Give Kids the World Village in Florida, inspiring discussion on future initiatives. Additionally, routine updates on staffing and educational programs were provided, along with deliberations on fiscal matters and community engagement in legislative advocacy.
The meeting’s most engaging segment involved a presentation by three students—Payton Kohler, Grace Patus, and Sinclair Zorski—who shared their experiences from a Capstone trip to Give Kids the World Village, an organization that works with Make-A-Wish Foundation to provide free vacations for families with critically ill children. The students recounted their volunteer activities, which included serving meals, delivering food, and participating in interactive sessions with the children. Patus expressed her enjoyment in helping children decorate stars in the village’s castle, each star representing a Make-A-Wish child’s dream. Zorski noted that despite initial expectations of a somber experience, the trip was filled with positivity and joy, as families were there to relish their moments together.
The board members engaged with the students on various aspects of the trip. Zorski estimated that 112 families, as well as some alumni families, attended the event. The board was informed about the village’s operational support from major theme parks such as Disney, SeaWorld, and Universal. Enthusiasm grew among students and board members for the potential expansion of this service learning approach, with discussions on organizing a fundraiser to support future trips. The students had limited time to gather funds for this year’s trip, highlighting the need for improved planning in subsequent years. They also created a video documenting their experience, which will be shared on the school website.
Following the students’ presentation, Superintendent Diane DiGiuseppe provided updates on the recent HBW transition and VHS graduation ceremonies, both of which were received positively. DiGiuseppe reported an increase in job applicants due to workforce reductions in other districts, highlighting vacancies in kindergarten and elementary music positions. DiGiuseppe also emphasized the district’s ongoing need for paraprofessionals, lunch aides, bus drivers, and custodians.
The district’s summer reading program was also introduced, designed to bolster reading skills and inspire students to reflect on themes such as courage, hope, and determination. Specific assignments were outlined for each grade level. Eighth graders, for example, will explore heroism through non-fiction and memoirs, encouraging them to consider societal improvements.
The meeting continued with personnel acknowledgments, notably a kindergarten teacher and a music program coordinator who were praised for their long-term contributions to the district. The business administrator briefed the board on preparations for the annual school audit and maintenance projects, which began promptly at the start of summer.
During the public comment segment, no immediate feedback on agenda action items was offered, but a subsequent session for non-agenda items was planned. The board discussed the decision to withdraw from the Trees for Schools grant due to timing issues with tree delivery. However, the township will still plant the 31 trees initially intended for the program.
Financial discussions included resolutions for approval and concerns about potential healthcare benefit increases. The board anticipated preliminary figures by December, noting that community involvement is crucial in advocating for legislative relief regarding healthcare costs. Despite the availability of numerous bills for consideration, no active discussions on relief were identified.
The board also addressed special education costs, emphasizing the district’s obligation to manage these expenses irrespective of state funding. Concerns were raised about specific costs outlined in agenda item B7.
