Alyssa Nelson, an assistant city manager involved in the project, presented the proposal to overhaul park signage, catalyzed by community feedback identifying park maintenance as a concern. The existing signage was described as inconsistent and, in some cases, missing entirely. The new plan involves four tiers of signage tailored to different park types, from large regional parks to small neighborhood and natural parks. The intent is to foster a welcoming environment for visitors and strengthen the sense of community identity.

The committee’s focus is not only on aesthetics but also on functionality. It plans to incorporate park rules on the back of entrance signs to minimize clutter while ensuring important information, such as park hours, is readily available. The inclusion of wayfinding signs during the second phase of the project is crucial, especially during large events and tournaments, to aid visitors unfamiliar with park layouts.

Particular parks, like Rap City Park and Lions Park, were noted for their urgent signage needs. Rap City Park currently lacks a sign due to theft, and Lions Park’s main entrance has never been marked, highlighting the necessity for immediate action in these areas. The proposal also includes consideration for incorporating local branding, such as the “Victoria” logo, to enhance city identification and community pride.

The discussion also touched on the historical significance of Madison Park, which was renamed in memory of a local girl, emphasizing the importance of preserving existing design elements in any new signage. The committee acknowledged the need to prioritize heavily trafficked parks for new signage installations, balancing this with the available budget and potential installation costs that could exceed initial estimates.

The committee also explored material options that mimic the natural aesthetic while being durable and low-maintenance. Attention to ADA compliance was also a key consideration.

Alongside the signage project, the committee addressed the condition of the recreation center’s roof, which was brought up by a citizen concerned about its peeling paint. While not part of the current plans, the aesthetic issue was acknowledged, with the responsibility for maintenance identified as falling under the school district.

Additionally, updates were provided on upcoming community events, including a Halloween celebration in collaboration with the Lions Club and Victoria Business Association, scheduled for October 26 at Bayfront Park. Preparations for winterization of park facilities were also noted, with activities such as the removal of portable restrooms and tennis court nets slated for completion by November 1, weather permitting.
