Victoria’s Senior Advisory Committee Sees High Interest in New Defensive Driving Program
- Meeting Overview:
The Victoria Senior Advisory Committee meeting was marked by community engagement, highlighted by the overwhelming interest in a newly offered defensive driving program. Over 70 residents have registered, prompting the relocation of the event to a larger venue. In addition to this, the committee addressed issues regarding future planning, public engagement, and communication improvements for senior citizens.
The free defensive driving program, organized by Laura from Cornerstone Insurance, has garnered substantial attention, with registrations surpassing expectations. Scheduled for February 7th, the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lions venue, having been moved from the council chambers to accommodate the large number of participants. Attendees will receive a certificate that can be submitted to their insurance provider. The committee expressed enthusiasm about the high turnout and the community’s eagerness to participate in such initiatives.
As the meeting progressed, the committee discussed the formation of the 2025 work plan, emphasizing the importance of early and thorough planning. This work plan will not only cover 2025 but also extend into 2026. Members reflected on past successful initiatives, such as the “donuts and Victoria” series and the creation of the Senior Resource guide, and the development of community walking routes designed to promote active living among older residents.
A significant aspect of the work plan involves the enhancement of the walking system plan. Following a walking audit conducted in 2023, the committee is focused on identifying areas for improvement and potential funding sources to implement these enhancements.
Furthermore, the committee is engaged in the downtown west development project, particularly regarding the second phase. With the recent groundbreaking for the Olivine apartment complex, the committee aims to ensure that public spaces, including seating and lighting, meet safety and accessibility standards. A community survey has been conducted to gather input on desired amenities and businesses, leading to a request for proposals from developers. Three proposals were received, and a developer has been selected to collaborate with the city council on future plans.
The committee also addressed potential impacts of ongoing construction, particularly relating to Highway 5, on downtown accessibility. Current efforts focus on connecting Stiger Lake Lane to County Road 11, including constructing roundabouts to facilitate traffic flow. Despite initial slow development phases, the connection of key corridors remains a priority for the committee.
Attention was also given to the Senior Resource guide, a continuous project that serves as a vital communication tool for the senior population. The committee discussed strategies to enhance the guide’s reach, particularly to seniors who may not be internet-savvy. Suggestions included distributing printed copies to local establishments and faith-based communities, as well as engaging with local businesses and religious organizations to raise awareness about senior programs.
The committee recognized a gap in reaching seniors who prefer traditional forms of information dissemination, particularly in the absence of a local paper. While a new online resource offering a free online newspaper was mentioned, it does not entirely address the issue for non-tech-savvy individuals. Thus, the committee acknowledged the need for targeted communication strategies to bridge this gap.
In terms of community presence, the committee considered increasing their participation in local events, such as “afternoons in the park,” by setting up booths to engage directly with the public. Ideas for attracting the 55-plus community included activities like a putting green or bean bag toss. The committee also highlighted the importance of publicizing these appearances.
